  1. Secretary-General to Pay Official Visit to Austria

UN (Reuters) - The United Nations Secretary-General will pay a three-day official visit to Vienna next week at the invitation of the Austrian Government, during which he will meet the President of the country.

Mr. Ban’s visit from 22 to 24 February will follow his attendance at a meeting in Berlin of the so-called diplomatic Quartet of Middle-East peace brokers seeking to revive talks between Israel and the Palestinians, the second such meeting this month. The Quartet, comprising the UN, Russia, the European Union and the United States, has been promoting the so-called road map plan for a two-state solution. The solution will enable Israel and Palestine to live side by side in peace.

During his visit to Austria, Mr. Ban will also confer with the Director-General of the UN Office in Vienna and the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General.

  1. Push for direct Middle East talks nearing turning point – un

UN (Reuters) - Efforts to promote direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians are nearing a turning point, a senior United Nations official said today, underlining that success depends on continued regional and international support.

Since May, seven rounds of indirect talks have been held between the two sides to identify areas of mutual interest, the Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs told the Security Council.

Currently, the parties are holding discussions at home on whether to enter direct talks. “We urge them to be forthcoming in their deliberations and are hopeful that both sides will seize the opportunity to make decisive progress towards a mutually-acceptable two-state solution, within a realistic timeframe,” the UN official said.

He voiced appreciation for the United States’ mediation, and welcomed last month’s decision by the foreign ministers of the Arab League to give its backing, in principle, to Mr. Abbas’ decision to enter into direct negotiations when he deems it appropriate.

  1. Un officials set to take part in high-level meeting on challenges facing Yemen

UN (Reuters) - The United Nations political chief will head a delegation from the world body taking part in tomorrow’s international high-level meeting in London on the situation in Yemen, amid rising concerns about the possible influence of Al-Qaida and other radical elements in the Arab country.

B. Lynn Pascoe, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, is among the UN officials participating in the gathering, which will also examine economic, development and humanitarian issues.

The British Prime Minister has organized the2 one-day conference, which aims to bring together representatives of the Yemeni Government, the UN and the broader international community to determine how they can best jointly tackle the major challenges facing Yemen, including the threat posed by terrorism.

Sustained international support will be needed to ensure Yemen’s prosperity, security and stability, a UN spokesperson said today, stressing that it is hoped the conference will be the start of a long-term process of cooperation between Yemeni authorities and the country’s regional and international partners.
