Economic Outline of the uk

The UK is a highly-developed country. It is one (0) in the world’s largest exporters of manufactured goods per head of population.

Britain used to (1) was richly forested, but most of the forests were cut (2) up to make more room for cultivation. The greater part of land is used for sheep breeding and pig raising. Among the crops (3) brought on the farms are wheat, barley and oats. The fields are mainly in the eastern part of the country. The county of Kent, known as “The Garden of England”, has excelled in fruit growing since the Romans first planted orchards and vineyards there.

The original basis of British industry was coal-mining, and the early factories grew up not far from the main (4) mining areas. Glasgow and Newcastle became great centers of engineering and shipbuilding. Lancashire and Greater Manchester produced cotton, Sheffield concentrated (5) with iron and steel. Birmingham (6) moved light engineering. The structure of industry changed in the last half of the 20th century. As coal production declined, oil production (7) varied it as a major industry. Car production became a (8) significant part of the industrial base (Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, etc.). Industrial production also expanded into communications equipment, including fiber optics and computers. Scotland and Northern Ireland are still noted for (9) their production of whiskey and textiles, especially linen from Northern Ireland and tweed from Scotland.

The leading traditional (10) manufacturing regions of England are Greater London and the cities and regions around Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and Newcastle upon Tyne.

The (11) official currency of the United Kingdom is the pound (symbol: £) which is divided into 100 pence. The singular of pence is "penny". The symbol for the penny is "p"; hence an amount such as 50p is often pronounced "fifty pee" rather (12) than "fifty pence". Current coins are 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, 1 pound, and 2 pounds. Current bank notes are the 5 pound note, the 10 pound note, the 20 pound note and the 50 pound note.

British Royal history has seen several dynasties since 1154: the Plantagenets, the Lancastrians, the Yorkists, the Tudors, the Stuarts, the Hanoverians, Saxe-Coburg Gotha, the Windsors (nowadays).

(2) at present the British royal family is headed by Queen Elizabeth II. She was born in 1926 and became Queen in 1952. Although The Queen was born on 21 April, it has long been the tradition to celebrate her official birthday by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour on in June, when good weather is more likely.

She is Head of the Commonwealth, Head of the Church of England and Commander-in-Chief of the (3) armed Forces. Functions of the Sovereign (4) carry out : opening and closing Parliament, meeting the Prime Minister, giving her Royal Assent to bills, giving honours. Among Queen Elizabeth's many (5) work are the regular visits she makes to the countries of the Commonwealth, whose interests and (6) charity are very important to her. The annual Christmas broadcast made by the Queen on radio and television has become a traditional feature of the year.

The Queen is (7) broadly known for her interest in horse-racing. She attends Royal Ascot regularly (8) worn a fascinating hat as well as all the other ladies at this summer event. In 2013 she became the first (9) reigning British monarch in history with a winning horse in Royal Ascot's biggest race.

The Queen is married (10) with Prince Philip and has 4 children and 8 grandchildren. The Queen's heir is Charles, Prince of Wales, who was born in 1948, married Lady Diana Spencer and has two children, Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana won the affection of many people by her (11) modernity , shyness and beauty. Unfortunately, she died in a car accident in August in 1997.

In 2011 Prince William and Catherine Middleton were married at Westminster Abbey. They are known as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. In 2013 Catherine gave (12) birth to the couple's first child, Prince George of Cambridge.
