History of the plant

History of the plant is abundant in remarkable, sometimes complicated, events of its life and development. Following logic of scientific and technical development the Kemerovo by-product coke plant experienced two times – in years 1930 – 43 and 1971 – 80 – in-depth technological re-equipment and reconstruction remaining one of the leading plants in the industry.

Intensive industrial development of Kemerovo in 60 – 80s of the last century had led to significant aggravation of ecological situation. A decision on closing separate production sections and plants was made. It was supposed to carry out a re-profiling of the Kemerovo by-product coke plant as well.

However the labour collective has managed to hold out in that complicated situation and save the plant. There has been worked out and consequently put into practice a strategy of ecological improvement of technological processes. At the end of 80s and start of 90s some chemical shops, coke-oven tar pitch shop and separate units of coking production were put out of production. Organizational and engineering measures ensuring significant reduction of harmful environmental effects have been developed and are being purposefully introduced for the remaining operating capacities. In 1995-96 a relining of coke-oven battery № 4 was carried out. Hot repair of oven fund using technologies of German companies «Holter», «Fosbel» and «Lichtenberg» is being constantly made. The most significant event which opened a new period in the development of JSC «Koks» was commissioning in May, 2001, of coke-oven battery № 6. The new aggregate is remarkable for a complex use of all modern engineering decisions aimed at enhancing performance, reducing gas and dust emissions, improving working conditions, expanding automation of production process. The striving of the collective to expansion of production is backed by the local authorities and the governor of Kuzbass A.G. Tuleev. The construction of battery No 6 has been carried out under his auspices, and the program of the plant modernization is connected with the task of expansion of processing industrial infrastructures in the region.

Simultaneously with reconstruction and modernization of coke-oven batteries work on technical renovation of chemical shops of the plant is underway. The main achievement towards this goal is engineering in conjunction with VUKHIN, construction and commissioning in 2000 of the installation for ammonia removal from coke-oven gas using the circular phosphate process. Putting this equipment in operation enabled to avoid using in production large quantities of sulfuric acid and eliminate production of ammonium sulphate whose sale as fertilizer had caused a serious problem for a long time. At the same time emissions are reduced, additional source of steam is obtained. Application of microprocessor engineering has allowed to completely computerize this installation. Such technique has been applied for the first time in Russia. In the shop of catching № 2 a new installation for treatment of waste waters is being tested. The technology of waste water treatment will allow us to receive water of such quality as will make possible its further use in production without any limitation. Strict observance of technological discipline, introduction of computerized control systems, ecological training of personnel ensures a constant reduction of pollutant emissions. Thus, over a period from 1997 to 2002 specific atmosphere is emissions have decreased from 3,87 kg to 3,0 kg per ton of coke. The treated effluents of the plant are in a closed technological process. The regularity of partnership relations helps to envisage more clearly and precisely an economic perspective. The «Koks» tends to surround itself by long-term and reliable partners. It refers in the first place to the suppliers of coal feed stock. A few years ago the JSC «Koks» invested funds in financial recovery of coal treatment factory in the town of Beryozovsky situated 50 kilometers from Kemerovo. Coals supplied from various mines of Kuzbass run a preliminary preparation here and go by regular routes to the plant site. Coke as metallurgical fuel is realized in metal. Strong economic links with its makers are of great importance. Fora number of years such partnership relations exist with the joint-stock company «Tulachermet» known in the European markets as a major supplier of quality pig-iron. It is a leading Russian exporter of pig-iron. Up to 120 thousand tons of coke are shipped monthly from Kemerovo to Tula to give birth in blast furnaces to the famous Tula metal. With the purpose of strengthening ties with coal producers the Koks has invested funds in the expansion of the factory for production of rock-dust in the city of Guryevsk. Its product helps to ensure safe labor of the miners.

For its 80-year's history the plant was rebuilt several times updating its production facilities. Development of technology facilitated growth of experience and knowledge of the plant specialists about coking properties and abilities of the Kuzbass coals, as well as recovery from them various chemical by-products. This knowledge allows today the joint-stock company to confidently operate in the raw market.

Nowadays the performance of productive capacities of the joint-stock company amounts to 2850 thousand tons of coke annually Four basic technological shops constitute the plant: coal preparation shop, coking shop and two shops for recovery of coke chemical by-products. Their operation is ensured by maintenance and service divisions: steam shop, specialized shops for repair of the coke- chemical equipment № 1 and № 2, electrical shop, a shop of metrology and automation, motor transportation shop, mechanical repair shop, central plant and eco-analytic laboratory.

Awards

The plant was decorated with the Lenin order and the order of Red Labor Colors in 1943, 1974 years. In 1946 Red Colors of the State Defense Committee was handed over to the plant for the perpetual storage. Three employees of the plant were given the rank of the Hero of Socialistic Labor: Gorbunov F.A. – pitch oven panman (дражеровщик), Petrakova A.K. – coke-pushing ram engineer, Kudryavtsev S.M. – coke-oven hot repair foreman. To strive for the future is to work today with full effect. The "Koks" has many confirmations of correctness of such strategy.

The company has become a winner in the 2001contest "Best Russian plants", was put on the list of "200 largest companies of Russia".

According to 2001 results the "Koks" was awarded the diploma of honourable taxplayer of Kuzbass by the regional administration, the diploma "Guarantor of good deeds" by the Kemerovo administration. The diplomas and other awards received are landmarks of present days of the plant.

Annually joint-stock company "Koks" takes part in the All-Russian and international competitions and becomes their laureate, meets with prestigious approval of economic experts, the Kemerovo city and Kemerovo region government express their gratitude to it.
