7.Read the text “Pasta – The World‟s Favourite Food”. Look at the food in the pictures below and say which of the products are mentioned in the text.

Pasta - The World's Favorite Food

Pasta is the world‘s favorite food. People from 17 countries said that pasta is what they like to eat most. Not only is pasta the number one food in its home country Italy, but people like it in faraway places like the Philippines, Mexico and South Africa.

Pasta has become popular, for one thing, because it is cheap and easy to prepare. Just cook pasta, make a sauce to go with it and it is ready. Many different types of meals can be created with pasta. It tastes good and fills your stomach. It produces energy, which is why athletes eat pasta regularly. Pasta can also be kept for a longer time.

Before it became popular in Italy during the 19 th century, earlier civilizations also ate forms of pasta. The ancient Greeks and Romans created pasta-like foods. Legend says that Marco Polo brought pasta back to Italy with him but this is not true. Arabs probably brought a noodle-like dish to Sicily in the 8th century.

Pasta first became popular in Naples, Italy in the 1700s where it was combined with tomato sauce. It was an ideal food to feed large parts of the population. When more and more Italians immigrated to America at the beginning of the 20th century they took their eating habits with them. Pasta and pizza immediately became popular in America.

258

Although many people think that spaghetti is the main form of pasta there are over 600 types with different forms and shapes. And each of them is cooked in a different way.

12.Read the text “A customer‟s complaint” and answer the questions below. Choose the correct variant. Explain the reason of your choice.

A customer's complaint

Shops are full of nice-looking things to buy these days, but what are we really paying for? A week ago I bought a large packet of chocolate biscuits. When I opened it, I found each was wrapped individually in paper and then packed in a box, which was wrapped in plastic! By the time I had got at the biscuits, the table was in paper and I wasn't hungry any more. (This was probably well as there were only eight biscuits in the packet)

And children's toys are even worse. It was my three-year old son's birthday last week and at first he was excited to see so many presents all for him! But at the end of the party, when he had finally opened wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and plastic bags, he was too tired to play with any of them. Some of them were so well-wrapped that he couldn‘t open them and when I tried to do it for him, I broke my fingernails. I hate to think of money all of this costs - and who is paying for it? The customer!

1) What is the writer trying to do in this text?

a.complain that supermarket food is unhealthy?

b.complain that children get too many toys?

c.complain that many things are too well wrapped?

d.complain that everything is too expensive nowadays?
