1.5. And now we suggest you extending your university vocabulary with the help of famous Roget’s Thesaurus of 2000 (the first edition of the dictionary appeared in 1852). Before your work with an article from this dictionary read the following five points in Russian. They explain how an article of this dictionary is organized:
1) жирным курсивом в начале статьи представлено слово, организующее словарную статью, – лексико-семантическое поле данного исходного слова;
2) курсивом представлены тематические (темообразующие, а в каких-то случаях и полеобразующие) для данного словаря слова (цифра подсказывает, где можно найти ту или иную тематическую или полевую группу слов);
3) абзац в словарной статье означает начало новой тематической группы внутри поля;
4) жирная буква в начале некоторых абзацев указывает на часть речи, в которой представлена тематическая группа;
5) в рамках абзаца через запятую помещены более близкие по значению слова, а через точку с запятой – менее близкие.
1.6. Work in small groups with the paragraph “academy” from the dictionary article «539 School». Translate it into Russian. Compare your translation with the Key.
539 School
N. academy, institute, educational i.; college, lyceum, gymnasium, senior secondary school; conservatoire, ballet school, art s., academy of dramatic art; finishing school; correspondence college; university, campus; … ; polytechnic, poly; alma mater, old school, groves of academy.
1.7. Characterize the paradigms (groups) of the English-language culture which are marked in the dictionary by semi columns ( ; ). If such a dictionary existed in Russian, do you think it could contain similar paradigms or different ones? Give some examples. Study Russian language dictionaries of synonyms and related words. Prove your opinion.
