Grammar Tasks
1. Decide why the italicized nouns are used with a, the, ø.
The Thayers had a very pretty home and the room assigned to us was close to perfection.
She poured about a tablespoonful of cream into his coffee-cup and for a second I was afraid he was going to pick up the cup and throw it in her face.
He started to light a Jaguar cigaret, the brand he had been smoking for years.
“Man! Man!” exclaimed Mrs. Thayer. “You’ve picked the most uncomfortable chair in the house!”
After all, Gershwin is a rival of my husband’s and, in some folks’ opinion, a worthy one.
There was coffee, and Ben managed to guzzle a cup before it was desecrated with pure cream.
I’m sorry now that I didn’t give you the message when I got it, but I memorized it and can repeat it word by word.
We have our own cows and the cream is so rich that it’s almost like butter.
“Do tunes come into your mind and then you write them down, or do you just sit at the piano and improvise until you strike something good?” “Sometimes one way and sometimes the other,” said Ben.
It was brought to me by a friend of mine who just got back from Cuba.
2. Translate the sentences below into Ukrainian. Pay attention to the word in bold.
Not one note do you play as lond as you’re your guest!
“I like hard straight chairs,” said Ben, but sank into the soft, nice one and again opened his book.
After all, Gershwin is a rival of my husband’s and, in some folks’ opinion, a worthy one.
“Here! Wait a minute!” said Mr. Thayer. “Try one of mine [cigaret]”.
“I’ll sample one [cigaret] later,” said Ben. “You’ve simply got to try one now,” said Mrs. Thayer.
I’d be a fine one to ask you to my home for a rest and then make you perform.
Just try any one of those books in that pile.
“We’ve got lots later ones that,” she said. “Let me play you the new Gerwins.”
“Mrs. Thayer,” said Ben, “do you ever have premonitions or hutches?.. I had one not half an hour ago.”
“I have one more confession to make.”
3. Change the following sentences from the story:
A into direct speech
I had warned Mrs. Thayer in advance [and Ben was served with coffee].
He declined a second chop.
There [upstairs] Ben stated grimly that I might do as I choose, but he was leaving Liberty Hall ere another sun had set.
B into indirect speech
“You haven’t tasted your coffee,” said Mrs. Thayer.
“Here! Wait a minute!” said Mr. Thayer. “Try one of mine [cigaret]”.
“Don’t you care for cheese, Mr. Drake?” asked Mr. Thayer.
Reading Comprehension and Discussion Tasks
1. Answer the questions:
Were the Drakes first pleased with their spending time in Liberty Hall?
Was Mr. Drake a self-restrained person? Prove it.
Did he manage to play the melody that was in his head?
What were Ben’s preferences and distastes in food?
Why was Mr. Drake prevented from listening and reading what he wanted?
Why didn’t Mrs. Thayer want to play bridge with her husband?
How were the Drakes going to leave Liberty Hall?
Did they succeed in it?
