VASILI SUKHOMLINSKY

Vasili Sukhomlinsky became famous as a teacher and an educationalist. His books have been translated into many languages and have been received with great interest in every continent. He defended his thesis before the Scientific Council of the University of Kiev and received his Candidate’s Degree in Pedagogy. Sukhomlinsky was 39 when he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences.

“My Big House” he called the two-storey red brick school building where he lived and worked. In the 23 years that he had worked as the head of the Pavlysh school it had changed very much. He described it in his book The Pavlysh Secondary School. It stands on the outskirts of a large rural center 15 kilometers from Kremenchug.

Sukhomlinsky maintained that pedagogy is a science for all, parents as well as teachers. Every mother and every father should have a minimum knowledge of pedagogy. The Parents’ school opened by him in Pavlysh invited parents to enroll two years before sending their child to the first grade, and continue taking its courses until their child was in high school.

At the meeting of its Teaching Council, he reminded the teachers that “every mother and every father who comes to the school, comes in the hope of receiving welcome news of their child’s progress from his teachers. Don’t deny parents that hope! No child must ever be given to feel that he is a failure, that he has no ability.

The building of character is ensured in the educational process when the teacher treats the pupil as an equal, as one man another.

MY FUTURE PROFESSION

In the life of every man there is the time when he is to decide what he is going to be. To my mind, when we try to choose our future profession we must take into account many factors. First and foremost, we must consider our abilities, personal tastes, turn of mind and family traditions.

They say that there are over 2,000 professions in the world, and new ones keep appearing all the time, so it is quite difficult to choose and make a decision.

It was not easy for me to make up my mind and choose one of the hundreds jobs to which I might be better suited. Now I have already decided what to do. I would like to be a teacher. I know that it is very difficult to become a good teacher. You should know perfectly the subject you teach, you must be well-educated and well-informed. The teacher’s work requires love for children, patience and ability to explain.

The profession of a teacher is useful, noble and responsible. It is a great responsibility to bring up children. I think that is the reason why teachers are deeply respected. Teachers are real engineers of human souls. I am fully aware of the difficulties of my future work. But I am happy that I have chosen this noble profession. I think every person can make a good teacher if he has a talent, the talent of an organizer and a tremendous desire and ability to work.

I hope I will be suited to the profession I have chosen.
