Lesson 6

 Text of conversation

Nora: What are you going to do on this beautiful warm Sunday, Harry?

Harry: I think I shall do a bit of gardening. Will you help me, Nora?

Nora: Of course I will. Shall I put on my gardening boots?

Harry: Yes, do - and so will I. I'm going to dig up that dead tree at the bottom of the garden.

Nora: Shall I be able to help you?

Harry: No, I don't think you will. You can be cutting off the tops of the dead flowers they make the garden look so untidy. And all those flowers by the wall you can pull up by the roots. We want the ground to be quite clear before the winter. You will see when I have finished - or I'll see when you have - and then we'll think of something we can do together.

Nora: Oh, Harry - will you please paint the roof of the shed? That really does make the garden look untidy.

Harry: It shall be painted! - but not till next weekend.

Nora: And you shall have a glass of beer when the tree is bug up. I'll bring it out to you.

Harry: That'll be very nice - i shall certainly be ready for it.

Nora: Are you going to water those new fruittrees?

Harry: No, I shan't do that, because I think it will rain tomorrow. But I'm going to cut the grass.

Nora: I'll cut it if you like.

Harry: No, you just clear the flower-beds and then we'll see. No, what tools shall we need?

Nora: You will want the spade and fork, and I shall want the trowel.

Harry: I say, how black those clouds are getting. I think it's going to rain.

Nora: Then we shall have to put off our gardening until this afternoon.

Harry: I hope I can still have my glass of beer!

Lesson 7.

 Text of conversation

Harry: Oh Nora, here's a letter from old Bartley. He wants to come and stay for a week from Friday.

Nora: That will be nice, won't it? He's such a nice old dear.

Harry: He's a fussy old nuisance.

Nora: Now, which room can he have? Oh yes, he shall sleep in Robert's room, and Robert shall with Peter. Peter, you will let Robert sleep in your room just for a few nights, won't you?

Peter: Oh Nother, I don't want to share with Robert! He won't like it either.

Nora: Just while Mr.Bartle is here; you shall have your room to yourself as soon as he goes.

Harry: Now what about Rex - you know old Bartle hates dogs. I'll ask the Howards to take him. I'm sure they will - they're such obliging people.

Nora: And shall he have his breakfast in bed every day? I suppose I must do that for him. /Door bell / Will you see who that is at the door, Peter?

Peter: Yes Nother, I will.

Harry: Shall I hang up that terrible picture he gave us for a wedding present? He won't like our keeping it in a cupboard.

Nora: Oh yes, you must. And we'll have to have dinner at seven instead of tea at six, as he likes it better.

Harry: In fact the whole house will be turned upside down, we shan't have any peace, and old Bartle is a nuisance, just as I said.

Peter: It's a telegram, Mum.

Nora: Now who's this from? Oh! Well, you can both breathe a sigh of relief. Mr.Bartle won't be coming after all; he's got a cold.
