What is Kazan?

Asking for Directions

Most of the time, you should start by saying excuse me.

“Excuse me. Do you know where the post office is?”

“Excuse me. How can I get to the Universiade Village?”

“Excuse me. Can you give me quick directions to the movie theatre?”

“Excuse me. Do you know how to get to the “Tezuche” from here?” “Excuse me. I’m looking for the post office. Do you know how to get there?”

“Excuse me. What is the best way to get to Kremlin?”

Left Right and Around the Corner

“Take a left at the next light.” “Take a right at the gas station.” “Take a left when you come to a stop sign.”

“Turn left after you pass McDonalds.”

“Turn left at the next street and immediately take another left.”

“It’s just right around the corner on the left side.”

Across Blocks and Miles

“After you turn right, go for five blocks and turn left. It will be right around the corner.”

“Go for four blocks and then turn right.”

“It’s across the street from the library.”

“It’s pretty far from here. Go on Washington Street for about 2 miles. You’ll see it next to a school.”

Light and ‘Y’

“Go down this street, after you pass two stop lights, turn right on the third light. You’ll see it right around the corner.”

A ‘Y’ is a street that turns into two. It’s not really a left turn or a right turn, but the street is shaped like the letter ‘Y’.

“Keep going down this street. Stay on the left side when you reach the ‘Y’. At the next light, turn right.”

Dead end and ‘T’

A ‘T’ intersection is a three way intersection. You can either go left or right. The street is shaped like the letter ‘T’ so people call it a ‘T’.

“At the ‘T’ intersection, turn right. It is just around the corner.”

This isn’t a direction terminology, but dead end is a road that has only one entrance. That means the only way out is the way you came in. “Turn right on 117th. It’s a dead end. We are on the right hand side at the end of the street.”

1.- Pardon me,sir. Could you tell me how to get to the bus terminal -Turn left(right)at the corner. -Thank you.

-You are welcome.

1. You are talking to a friend. Make up questions about the places he/she has seen.

Examples:

P1: I went there to see the Suyumbike Tower.

T: When did you go there?

5.Why/Bauman Street? When/there?

6.Where /the National museum of Tatarstan situated?

2. Imagine you are in these 2 situations. Make up a dialogue and dramatize it.

Kazan is the city where a lot can be seen and much can be done. Say what people can see and do in the capital of Tatarstan.

A group of guests has come to Kazan. What will you tell them about its location, religions, emblem, population and places of interest?

Health and medical services

When we are ill, we call a doctor, and he examines us and diagnoses the illness. When we have a headache, a stomach ache, a sore throat, a cold, or a pain in some parts of the body, we call a doctor. He takes our temperature and our pulse. He examines our heart, our lungs, our stomach or the part where we have pain, and tells us what the matter is with us. The doctor prescribes medicine, and gives us a prescription, which we take to the chemist’s, who makes up the medicine.

If you follow the doctor’s orders, you get better; if you disobey the doctor, you may get worse, and even die. We must obey the doctor, if we want to get better. If we have a temperature, we must stay in bed and take the medicine he prescribes. If we cannot get better at home we must go to hospital. If we are too ill to walk, we go to hospital in the ambulance. After our illness we can go to a sanatorium until we are strong again.

Nation’s stereotype and its people’s character

A nation is a group of people who share common history and usually a language and usually, not always live at the same area. Culture can be described as our everyday life: how we communicate, what makes us happy and said. It also includes our language, religion, traditions, behavior, and way of life - in other words, what we do each day.

People that belong to various nations may differ and they always differ from one another. There is a great majority of factors that influence the nation’s stereotype and its people’s character. People who live in the southern countries have fewer problems than those who live in the North and because of this they’re more cheerful and artistic. The history also has a great influence on the national character. The peoples in Asia are revengeful because their forefathers often were at war with others. In Africa many countries were colonies of the Great Britain, Holland, Spain and so on and they (Africans) were the slaves and because of this they’re still hard-working and industrious.. It is not a myth that the National Character exists. But it doesn’t describe the character of every person; it describes the character of people of nation in general.
