Текст 2. Dialogue

MANAGING DIRECTOR: Before I tell you a little about our company, could I first thank you for seeing us at such short notice - it was very good of you.

SIBLEY: Please, don't mention it.

MANAGING DIRECTOR: Now about our company, Surefire Healing. We're a public limited company based In Wokingham. We've been in business some thirty years now. In the beginning, we made only heating and ventilation units they're still our main product lines, actually. But recently we've moved into the field of kitchen equipment for the hotel and catering trade.

SIBLEY: Interesting.

MANAGING DIRECTOR: Let me give you some idea of the company's size now. Our turnover last year was close to £30m, our pre-tax profits around £4.5m. We've got a work-force of approximately 300 employees. We're expanding fast, I'm happy to say.

SIBLEY: Very impressive.

MANAGING DIRECTOR: Thank you. Now Bob will say a word about our labour relations. He has more to do with that side of things than I do.

PRODUCTION MANAGER: Thanks Ian. Well, Mr. Sibley, our relations with the union are first class. We've never had a strike at the plant and obviously we're very proud of that record. It's probably because we treat our employees well. We listen to what they have to say about their work, and they've plenty of opportunities to give their opinion. I'm not saying we'll never have a strike.

SIBLEY: Mm. nothing's certain in life, is it?

MANAGING DIRECTOR: I think that gives you some idea of our business, Mr. Sibley. You see, we're planning to produce 30,000 micro-wave ovens next year. And we expect our output to rise to 60.000 or even 70.000, in two or three years' time. For that, we need a factory, say 40,000 square feet, and more workers. Eighty to a hundred employees at least.

SIBLEY: We can certainly help you there. Let me tell you what the north of England can offer you.

Текст 3. Key management skills

For managers to develop work agendas, act out roles and engage in planning, organizing, leading and controlling, they also need a knowledge base and key management skills. A knowledge base can include information about an industry and its technology, company policies and practices, company goals and plans, company culture, the personalities of key

organisation members, and important suppliers

and

customers. In addition to

having a knowledge base, managers need three

key

types of skills to carry

out the various functions of management.

For managers, the three key skill types are technical, human and conceptual.

Technical skills are skills that reflect both an understanding of and a proficiency in a specialized field. For example, a manager may have technical skills in accounting, finance, engineering, and manufacturing or computer science.

Human skills are skills associated with a manager's ability to work well with others both as a member of a group and as a leader who gets things done through others '.

Managers with effective human skills are very good at communicating with others and motivating them to develop themselves and perform well in pursuit of organisational goals.

Conceptual skills are skills related to the ability to visualise the organisation as a whole and understand how the organisation fits into the wider context of the industry, community and world. Managers need to recognise these various elements and understand the complex relationships among them so that they can take actions that advance the goals of the organisation.

Conceptual skills, coupled with technical skills, human skills, and a knowledge base, are important ingredients in organisational performance.

How to Delegate

Failure to delegate occurs for a number of reasons: Managers are most comfortable making familiar decisions; they feel they will lose personal status by delegating tasks; they believe they can do a better job themselves; or they have an aversion to risk. The following approach can help each manager delegate more effectively:

1)Delegate the whole task. A manager should delegate an entire task to one person rather than dividing it among several people. This type of delegation gives the individual complete responsibility and increases his or her initiative while giving the manager some control over the results.

2)Select the right person. Not all employees have the same capabilities and degree of motivation. Managers must match talent to task if delegation is to be effective. They should identify subordinates who made independent decisions in the past and show a desire for more responsibility.

3)Ensure that authority equals responsibility. In addition to having responsibility for completing a task, the worker must be given the authority to make decisions about how best to do the job.

19

4)Give thorough instruction. The subordinate must clearly understand the task and the expected results. It is a good idea to write down all provisions discussed, including required resources and when and how the results will be reported.

5)Maintain feedback. Feedback means keeping open lines of communication with the subordinate to answer questions and provide advice, but without exerting too much control.
