Finally, so that you may stay abreast of any changes in the flying and ground training requirements pertaining to pilot licences which may be introduced by your national aviation authority, be sure to consult, from time to time, the relevant publications issued by the authority. In the United Kingdom, the Civil Aviation Publication, LASORS, is worth looking at regularly. It is currently accessible, on-line, on the CAA website at www.caa.co.uk.

TO THE PILOT.

The book is intended specifically to meet the needs of the light aeroplane pilot. Its content and self assessment tests satisfy the demands of the theoretical knowledge syllabus of the Part-FCL/EASA Private Pilot’s Licence in the subjects of ‘Aircraft (General)’ and ‘Mass and Balance’.

The ‘Aeroplanes’ section of this book satisfies the PPL syllabus for the examination ‘Aircraft (General)’, and covers all of the systems which go to make up a modern light aeroplane: the electrical, electronic, mechanical and hydraulic systems, its flight instruments and its engine, propeller and engine instrumentation. Using this book, you should acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge of your aeroplane’s systems that you will need in order to fly your aeroplane efficiently and safely.

The second section of the book, on ‘Mass & Balance’, covers all the necessary knowledge and principles that the pilot needs to master in order to check that his aircraft is correctly loaded and balanced for safe and efficient operations.

The loading of an aircraft not only affects the position of an aircraft’s centre of gravity, but also determines whether the aircraft will achieve the required take-off performance, whether it can be landed safely, and at what speeds it can be safely manoeuvred.

Pilots need to understand thoroughly the role played by the position of the aeroplane’s centre of gravity. In whatever phase of flight the aircraft happens to be, it is vitally important that the location of the aircraft’s centre of gravity always remains within the limits specified by the designer of the aircraft. If the centre of gravity falls outside these limits, the aircraft’s flying characteristics will be adversely affected and the aircraft may ultimately become uncontrollable.

While we have attempted, in this book, to relate the subjects of ‘Aeroplanes’ and ‘Mass & Balance’ to the practical aspects of piloting, it is a primary aim of the book to prepare the student pilot for the PPL theoretical knowledge examinations. Appropriate emphasis, therefore, has been given to the pure theory of the two subjects which is demanded by the PPL ground examinations.

Readers should note that, at PPL level, the United Kingdom CivilAviationAuthority (UK

CAA) examines the subject of ‘Aircraft (General)’ along with the subject of ‘Principles of Flight’ in one paper, currently entitled ‘Aircraft (General)’ and ‘Principles of Flight’. Similarly, ‘Mass & Balance’ is examined by the UK CAA in a separate paper called ‘Flight Performance & Planning’, along with the subject ‘Aeroplane Performance’.

Volumes 5 and 6 of this series of books, entitled respectively ‘Principles of Flight’ and ‘Aeroplanes’, will prepare you for both examinations.
