60. As a candidate, would you prefer to be interviewed by a woman, a man or a board?

  1. By a woman because..................................................................

  2. By a man because.......................................................................

  3. By a board because....................................................................

  4. It doesn’t make any difference...................................................

61. Read the text and find information on:

  • aptitude tests

  • medical examination

  • intelligence tests

Making a Selection

It is quite normal for the candidate to be interviewed by more than one person. The interviewers would then compare notes before deciding which candidate to appoint.

The candidates may be given a test, in which the candidate’s potential to perform the necessary activities is measured. An aptitude test will cover areas such as:

  • mental abilities, e.g. powers of reasoning

  • arithmetic abilities, e.g. addition and multiplication.

An intelligence test may be used to find out the candidate’s general powers of reasoning. The test will normally be a written one, made up of numerical, diagrammatical and verbal questions, such as identifying one or more shapes which have common features. Or comparing a series of words to see which have similar meanings. Usually a certain time is given for the testee. Once the test is completed, it is marked and a score is obtained.

The company may also insist on a medical examination before the job offer is confirmed. This will give a clear indication as to whether the applicant is physically suitable for the post.

62. Discuss these points.

1. You receive a messy (небрежный) letter/job application you

a) look for the information in it regardless of its general appearance

b) are not impressed however brilliant the ideas are

c)..................................................

2. You are on the board interviewing applicants; you expect them to be dressed

  1. formally in a pressed suit/costume

  2. in anything they feel comfortable in

  3. ...................................................

3. Both a man and a woman are ideal candidates for the job and you, as a board member, have a say in the final decision. You would

  1. hire the woman after ‘chewing’ on the question for a long time

  2. hire the man as the only reasonable alternative

  3. hire the wo/man just because s/he is good-looking

  4. follow your intuition based on your first impressions

  5. toss a coin; if it’s heads, you employ the woman, if it’s tails, the man

d).................................................

4. When hiring employees, you would give preference to those who are

  1. single, with no strings attached, because they are more willing to take risks

  2. married because they are settled and used to responsibility

  3. ....................................
