Résumés are the core of the job search. Interviewers use the résumé to decide whether to interview you or forget you forever (or at least until you apply for another job with the company). Résumés are expected for almost all types of jobs from clerk to chief executive officer, and are a quick way to make an impression, either good or bad. Your first impression is made by your résumé - it is the résumé that makes an employer decide whether you should be called in for a job interview. It is the contents of the résumé that makes an employer decide not to choose you. If an employer has 500 résumés to read, you must be careful to not give him/her an excuse to throw your résumé in the garbage. Employers often do not have a lot of time to devote to each résumé. That's why it's important to make your résumé "knock the socks" off an employer reading it for the first time.

Your résumé should represent your strengths. Your résumé is your life on paper. Think in terms of the accomplishments of which you are the most proud.

A résumé is a one or two page summary of your education, skills, accomplishments, and experience. The purpose of your résumé is to get your foot in the door. A résumé does its job successfully if it does not exclude you from consideration. A résumé, as a personal, individual summary of your background, experience, training and skills, is an opportunity to present your best qualities to an employer the way you want to be seen. A résumé might be a prospect for you to generate interviews outside your geographic area. It is a way for employers to compare your specific qualifications to those of other candidates.

To prepare a successful résumé, you need to know how to review, summarize, and present your experiences and achievements on one page. Unless you have considerable experience, you don't need two pages. Outline your achievements briefly and concisely.

Your résumé is your ticket to an interview where you can sell yourself! Résumés allow you to have all the facts at your fingertips. This will eliminate fumbling for dates and significant facts.
