Text Cave secrets of Cappadocia region

A peculiar, fairytale landscape greeted French priest Guillaume de Jerphanion when he visited Urgup in Turkey's Cappadocia region in 1907. Amongst the mountains and valleys stood fantastic stone cones, pyramids and needles. Moreover, these geological sculptures had been excavated, either by the forces of nature or hand of man, and converted into homes or highly decorated churches.

The astonished Father Jerphanion decided to devote the remaining years of his life to studying the Urgup Cones and the rock-hewn churches of Cappadocia. Between 1925 and 1942 he published several volumes of a monumental work which alerted the world to a secret corner of Turkey that had remained virtually unknown since the 13th century.

The Urgup Cones are located in valleys to the west of the village of Urgup. When viewed from a distance, the outlines of the cones appear smooth and unbroken. At close quarters, however, innumerable doors and windows in the rock faces come into focus. This surreal architecture, shaped by natural forces, has been adapted by human beings to their needs. Thus caves in the soft, volcanic rock of the cones and in the cliffs around them, have been inhabited by peasants and monks almost continuously for at least 2,000 years.

Peasants transformed the lunar landscape into an agricultural centre while, in the Dark Ages, monks created an outpost of Christianity. Many caves, still inhabited by Turks, are remarkably comfortable, since the thick rock walls offer protection against the climate's temperature extremes: when snow covers the land, the caves are dry and warm; during the long, hot summer days, they become cool refuges from the midday sun. Finely decorated with richly coloured frescoes, more man 300 caves in the region have been transformed during medieval times into simple sanctuaries and churches.

The land around Urgup appears quite dry but with sufficient irrigation it is, in fact, remarkably fertile. Plants grow in the mineral-rich volcanic soil, enabling farmers to produce good crops from their orchards and vegetable gardens. Vines, apricots and peaches, in particular, thrive here. The local white wine has a unique flavour and a bouquet not unlike burning sulphur.
