Verb forms at a barber's shop

A man ___(to enter) a barber's shop with a boy of five or six years holding his hand. He ___(to be) in a great hurry and he ___(to ask) the barber to cut his hair first and later to cut the boy's hair. "He can wait. I want you to cut my hair first," he ___(to say). The barber ___(to do) as he ___(to be) told and when he ___(to finish) the man ___(to get) out of the chair and the boy ___(to take) his place. The man ___(to excuse) himself and ___(to say) that he ___(to be) in a great hurry and that he would be back in a few minutes and would pay for them both. Then he ___(to leave) and the barber ___(to begin) to cut the boy's hair. When he ___(to finish) he ___(to pick) the boy up and ___(to place) him in a chair to wait. He ___(to give) him a magazine to look at. Half an hour ___(to pass). An hour ___(to pass). At last the barber ___(to tell) the child, "Don't worry, your father ___(to be) back soon." "My father?" ___(to say) the boy, "He ___(not to be) my father. I ___(to play) in the street and that man ___(to come) up to me and ___(to say) 'Come on with me, little boy. Let's go into this barber's shop together and have our hair cut."

The weather forecast (after Jerome k. Jerome)

The weather ___(to be) a thing that I can never understand. I ___(to remember) one summer day. We ___(to read) the weather forecast in the newspaper: "Heavy showers with thunderstorms." We ___(to decide) to stay at home. We ___(to look) at the people who ___(to pass) our house and ___(to say), "They ___(to come) home quite wet." At twelve o'clock it ___(to become) very hot. One of us ___(to say), "I'd like to know when those heavy showers and thunderstorms ___(to begin)?" "Ah! They ___(to come) in the afternoon, you'll see," we ___(to say) to each other. But there ___(to be) no rain on that day. The next morning we ___(to read), "The weather ___(to be) warm and fine, no rain." We ___(to go) to the country. We ___(to want) to have a good rest. But it ___(to begin) to rain hard, and it ___(to rain) the whole day. We ___(to come) home quite wet, with colds and rheumatism all over us.

A story too terrible to tell

Three men ___(to come) to New York for the first time. They ___(to take) a room in a hotel. In the evening they ___(to go) sightseeing and ___(not to come) back till nearly three in the morning. The room they ___(to take) was on the 43d floor. "I ___(to be) sorry, gentlemen," the porter ___(to say), "but the elevator ___(not to work). There ___(to be) something wrong with it. You ___(to have) to walk up to your room." This ___(to be) too bad. But the men ___(to agree) to tell stories on the way up in order to while away the time. By the time the first one ___(to tell) his story they ___(to climb) up to the 14th floor. The next story ___(to keep) them amused till they ___(to reach) the 31st floor. At last it ___(to be) time for the third man to tell his story, but he ___(to refuse). He ___(to say) that his story ___(to be) so terrible that he simply couldn't tell it. They ___(to continue) climbing and all the time the two ___(to ask) him to begin. At last they ___(to stop) and ___(to refuse) to go on unless he ___(to tell) them his terrible story. "The story I have to tell you ___(to be) a short one," he ___(to say) at last, "We ___(to leave) the key to our room downstairs."

ON A BUS

It ___(to be) during the rush-hour. As usual, all the seats in the bus ___(to be) occupied. When a pretty lady ___(to get) in, an elderly man who ___(to sit) near the door ___(to want) to rise but the lady at once ___(to press) him to keep his seat. "Thank you", she ___(to say), "I ___(not to mind) standing". - "But, madam, permit me..." "I ___(to insist) upon your sitting down". She ___(to interrupt) him and putting her hands on his shoulders she almost ___(to force) him back into his seat. The man ___(to try) again to stand up and ___(to say), "Madam, ___you kindly ___(to allow) me to... ?" But once more the lady ___(to cut) him short saying, "I ___(not to wish) to accept your seat, sir!" and ___(to force) him back with another push. With the utmost effort the man finally ___(to manage) to push her aside. "Madam", he ___(to call) out, "I ___(not to care) whether you ___(to take) my seat or not. It ___(to be) your fault that the bus ___already ___(to take) me two stops beyond my destination, and now I wish to get out".

AT THE STATION

We see three men at the railway station. They ___ (to speak) to a porter. "What time ___ (to be) the next train for London?" one of them ___ (to ask). "They ___ (to go) every hour. The next train ___ (to be) at ten o'clock," the porter ___ (to say). "That's all right," they ___ (to say). "Let's go to the refreshment room and wait for the train there." At two minutes past ten the three men ___ (to run) out of the refreshment room and ___ (to ask) the porter, "___ the train ___ (to go)?" "Yes, it has," the porter ___ (to say). "The next train ___ (to be) at eleven o'clock." "That ___ (to be) all right," the three men ___ (to say). "Let's go to the refreshment room and have a drink there."

At two minutes past eleven the three men again ___ (to run) out of the refreshment room but the eleven o'clock train ___ already ___ (to go). "The next train ___ (to be) at twelve o'clock. It ___ (to be) the last train for London," the porter ___ (to say).

At twelve o'clock we again ___ (to see) the three men running out of the refreshment room. Two of them ___ (to get) into a carriage but the third man ___ (not to get) into the train. He ___ (to stand) at the platform and ___ (to laugh). "Why ___ you ___ (to laugh)?" the porter asks (to ask). "Because those men ___ (to come) to see me off," the man___ (to say).
