As long ago as 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, in a declaration known as Agenda 21, it was recognized that major industries such as oil and gas had an adverse impact on the environment. Issues such as sustainable land management, protection of the oceans, safer use of toxic chemicals and the management of waste, became crucial considerations for boards of directors around the world. In oil and gas exploration, there are several possible side effects, such as oil spills, damaged land, accidents and fires, and incidents of air and water pollution.
