Is where you find it
Nature has an unpredictable way of scattering her bounty in the earth — ores and minerals, precious gems and metals. It's usually easy to recognize the gleaming nuggets and streaks running through quartz and other rocks. The same thing can't be said of the blackish ores of natural silver or the dull rocks that are precious gems in their natural state. *
Gold has another property that makes prospecting a little easier for people without fancy equipment: it's very heavy, heavier by far than lead, so it can easily be separated from the lighter rocks around it. Most prospecting equipment, such as pans, slices and rockers, takes advantage of this simple fact. Real prospectors often coat the bottoms of their pans, slices or rockers with a thin coating of mercury. Mercury has the wonderful property of sticking to gold, silver, and even platinum in a thick mixture known as amalgam. Mercury's tricky, though, and expensive. Prospectors who don't know the right way to separate mercury from gold are sometimes poisoned by the fumes.
How does gold come to be in stream beds anyway? Obviously the streams are bringing it from somewhere else. Molten gold is brought up from deep inside the Earth by the pressure and heat of great colliding land masses, called plates. Where such collisions take place you'll always find mountains, because the Earth's "skin" has folded and wrinkled in the crushing impact of two plates. That's why gold is usually found in the mountains. But it might not stay there long. Streams wear away parts of the mountains, carrying an unending river of soil, rock,
197
and sand along with them. Streams cut through seams of gold, too, starting grains and nuggets on their way to the sea.
Thus, gold may be deposited anywhere between the mountains and the ocean, or to borrow an old mines' expression, "Gold is where you find it!". Gold can even be found in dry deserts — perhaps they were once lake beds or crossed by long-vanished rivers. Golden grains strewn across the land in this way are known as alluvial deposits, from a Latin word meaning "stream".
Most gold, though, eventually washes away to the ocean. Scientists estimate that one cubic mile of ocean water contains more gold that man has found on Earth since history began! Unfortunately, no one has yet discovered how to extract gold from seawater without spending more in the process than the gold it brings in is worth.
So we continue to look for gold beneath solid ground. Some prospectors tunnel into the mountains, searching for fabulous gold seams. Large mining companies may wash away a whole mountain side, making their own alluvial sands to be separated later. Expensive modern detectors can locate just a few atoms of gold among the trillions in a solid sample. And satellites tell us where the Earth's rocky formations favour the chances of finding gold.

Text 7 THE EXPLODING EARTH
The earth changed right before a farmer's eyes one February morning in 1943, as a crack began opening in his cornfield about 200 miles from Mexico City. Within half an hour, steam began pouring out of the crack, then gases and ashes started shooting up in the air. Six days later, a cone-shaped mountain stood in the middle of that very cornfield. The first volcano in almost a hundred years had been formed. It was named Paricutin.
What causes the earth to suddenly form a mountain in the middle of some farm-land, or anywhere else, for that matter?
A volcano begins deep inside the earth, far below the surface is a layer of very hot rock. In fact, the rock is so hot in some places that it has melted. These hot rocks are constantly in motion, mixing with gases below the earth's surface. With time, due to pressure, the hot rocks explode towards the surface through a crack in the earth. When a volcano finally explodes, the result is fantastic. Lava — a combination of the hot rocks and gases — may travel like a river down the side of the mountain in a brilliant red colour. Other gases from the erupting volcano send clouds of dust and ash high into the sky.
200
Volcanoes are not all alike. Scientists have different ways to group them, basing these differences on the shape of the volcano and the combination of rocks and gases that mix during an eruption.
Volcanic activity seems closely related to earthquake activity. Scientists do know that volcanoes occur in the same areas as earthquakes. Most of the strongest volcanic explosions have occurred in an area called the Ring of Fire — an imaginary circle outlining all the North American and Asian coasts on the Pacific Ocean, plus some of the Ocean's islands.
But the strangest volcanic eruption occurred in another volcanic area, this time in the Atlantic Ocean. In 1963, the ocean floor started trembling. For the next four years, lava flowed up from the ocean floor. By 1967, a tiny island was formed in an area not far off the coast of Greenland. A cornfield? An island where none existed before? Care to guess where the next volcano will suddenly appear?
