IN THIS LARGE AND TINY WORLD
In this large and tiny world There is a place for all: There are continents Big and small,
There are creatures Short and tall,
There are climates Warm and cold, There are islands Young and old, There are rivers Short and long,
There are currents Weak and strong, There are valleys Wide and narrow, There are lakes Both deep and shallow, There are sunsets Red and yellow,
There are people I Rich and poor,
There are kind, And there are cruel, There are fat, And there are thin. But for nature All are kin:
None can lose, And none can win!

?
It is unique because it has the Biosphere.
?
Yes, you're right, the Biosphere is very specific as it has life.
?
Quite so, life is an extremely complex phenomenon because life is the creation and the result of complex biochemical processes.
?
Yes, it's quite true, since the composition and the energy of the Biosphere are conditioned by the past and present activity of living matter. That is why the components of the Biosphere are originally interconnected: lithospere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, living organisms and cosmic energy.
?
Yes, quite so. The Biosphere permanently evolves. There is a process of continuous interaction between living and non-living matter and energy, hence there is a constantly functioning biological circulation.

THE INFORMATION FOR SPECULATION

?
Yes, the history of the Earth is still a mystery.
?
There are numerous hypotheses as to the formation of the Earth! especially its primitive stage.
?
Yes, there are several stages in the Earth's history.
?
The first "cosmic" stage results in the formation of the Earth as aj separate planet.
?
You are right, the second stage is connected with the first.
?
It's a period of the formation of the planet's macrostructure and1 its primitive geospheres.
?
The next stage is biochemical evolution. Complex processes oi chemical evolution gradually transform into biochemical and biologi-l cal evolutions.
40
?
— Yes, organic macromolecules are formed in this period. And as a result this leads to the origin of life on Earth.
?
— No, it's not quite true. This is not the final stage of the evolution, next comes geological evolution.
?
— You are right. That is the period of formation of various miner als, lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.
?
Yes, there are two more evolutions: biological evolutions: biological evolution of organisms. That is the period of transition from the life of substance to the life of organisms...
?
Yes, the next stage starts with Man. It is cultural or technogenic evolution.

WHAT IS SCIENCE?
Science is a creative and dynamic activity. It is an expression of human experience. Science involves observation and measurement, imagination and hypothesis, communication and critisism.
A scientist observes and measures objects and phenomena of physical world. He analyses behavior of matter and energy. He generalizes from collection of observations>and measurements and relationships. He develops theories and uses them as guides to new experiments and observations.
Thus, first, a scientist identifies and classifies multiple facts and
data. Then, he generalizes and systematizes analogous facts of specific
character.
Further, he deduces conclusions as to general and systematic character of analogous facts combinations. Finally, he illustrates conclusions with different facts of reality. Thus, observation and identification, classification and systematization, generalization and illustration provide foundation for concept formation. Moreover, the scientist continually communicates with his colleagues through the scientific literature, in scientific meetings, and in informal person-to-person seminars and discussions. Thus, modern science is communication!

GEOLOGY AND THE IMPORTANCE I
OF BEING A GEOLOGIST
Geology is the study of the planet Earth, and is concerned with the origin and development of the Earth, the materials of which it is made up, and with the structure of both the surface and the interior of the plane! Geologists study the processes which act both on and within the Earth, and try to interpret the processes and conditions which operated during the 4,500,000,000 years of the Earth's history. The evolution of the planet has involved a wide range of physical, chemical and biological processes, and thus the geologist must have a broad scientific training. At the same time, a degree course in geology provides the student with a sound scientific background which is of value in many other walks of life.
Geology is vitally important to mankind in many ways and it is in the applied aspects of the discipline that many geology graduates find employment. Many of the Earth's major resources are found in the rocks on or within the Earth. These include mineral resources (such as metals and building materials), energy resources (such as coal, petroleum and the Earth's heat), and water resources — probably the most important of all. The geologist has an important role in exploration and production of these resources and in minimising damage to the environment. Other important applications of geology include the prediction and mitigation of geological hazards, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides, and the geologist is an essential member of civil engineering teams involved, for example, in the construction of bridges, dams and tunnels. The science of geology and its many applications play a major part in the economy of the nations of the world.I

■ Describe the schemes using the information bellow.
Minerals are formed by the combination of the elements. The elements combine to form minerals. Elements are unit constituents of minerals. There are eight the most abundant elements in the earth crust. They are oxygen, silicon, aluminum, magnesium, potassium, sodium, calcium, iron. Minerals are chemical compounds.
Elements + oxygen = oxides
Silicon + oxygen = silicon dioxide (silica)
Silica + water=silicic acids
Silicic acids+potassium, aluminum, sodium, calcium, iron, magnesium=silicates

Oxygen is colourless, odourless, tasteless gas, slightly soluble in water, and slightly heavier than air. Oxygen is the most chemically active substance known.
Hydrogen — the lightest of the elements, an odourless, colourless, flammable gas, occurring chiefly in combination with oxygen as watej and uniting chemically with many elements to form hydrocarbons, carl bohydrates, and other important compounds.
Ш Give the Russian for:
colourless, tasteless, odourless, slightly soluble, slightly heavier, the most chemically active substance known, flammable, occurring as water, in combination with, chiefly, other components
Ш Give the English for:
