TEXTS FOR LISTENING

1.I’m working in a newsagent’s. Of course, this kind of job is neither well-paid nor prestigious, but I like it. First of all it’s not difficult. My job involves serving customers and providing information on our products. Besides, I work only at weekends. But the main reason why I like this job is that I’m glad to earn

a little money instead of asking my parents for some. I hope I’ll be able to buy a new bike in a couple of months.

2. I don’t understand why many people think that women should stay at home to care for their families. We have the same ambitions to get to the top as men. Women now outnumber men in many positions. Some big corporations are run by women. I try to keep a balance between my work and familylife. When my second child was born three years ago, I didn’t leave my job because I decided to do as much work as I could handle. Of course, I worked fewer hours. Now I’m Vice President in charge of commercial design and I’m happy I didn’t quit three years ago.

3.Last month I had to leave for Washington on business and I had to take my 3-year-old daughter Ann with me. My friend Rachael always takes her 9-month-old son with her when she travels. She says that many hotels have various services for business travellers with children. They offer babysitting services, camps for children, child-friendly foods, toys and so on. So I didn’t hesitate when I decided to take Ann with me to Washington. But as soon as I arrived, I faced a number of problems. My client required my immediate attention and I had to find somebody to care for my daughter. I had to leave my child with a stranger in a strange city! During the meeting with my client I felt nervous and couldn’t help thinking about Ann. I don’t think I’ll bring her on a business trip next time.

4.Nowadays many graduates have a chance to work in a foreign country. According to the World Bank, one in six UK graduates are now working overseas. That’s well over a million people! It gives them a wider view of the world and helps them gain a higher level of experience. However, getting a work permit and settling in can be a problem. Some people also find having to speak a foreign language 24 hours a day really exhausting. But despite the problems, many graduates find working abroad extremely fulfilling.

AN INTERVIEW WITH RACHAEL RAY Interviewer: Hello, everybody! Welcome to our program “Ameri-

can Stars”. Today we are talking to Rachael Ray, a television personality, celebrity chef and author. Well, Rachael, tell us a few words about your family.

Rachael Ray: I was born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and grew up in Lake George, New York. My family owned a restaurant on Cape Cod and my mother managed restaurants in upstate New York. So, I grew up in food. Everyone on both sides of my family cooks.

Interviewer: Tell us about your concept of “30 Minute Meals”. Rachael Ray: You know, many people are reluctant to cook. So,

I teach them simple recipes that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less and that anyone can do at home. I like finding simple solutions to everyday problems. I wrote cookbooks based on the “30 Minute Meals” concept, and launched a magazine, “Every Day with Rachael Ray”, in 2006.

Interviewer: Your programs “Rachael Ray”, “30 Minute Meals”, “Rachael Ray’s Tasty Travels” and “$40 a Day” are very popular with the audience. Besides, I know that in addition to all your books, programs, and products, you have devoted much of your time to charity.

Rachael Ray: In 2006 I established Yum-O!, a nonprofit organization which aims to help children and families develop a healthy relationship with food. The organization introduces children and families to the kitchen, helps combat childhood hunger in the U.S., and raises money for food-based educational programs and scholarships.

Interviewer: In August 2009, you appeared on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” for charity for Yum-O!.

Rachael Ray: You are right. The second charity was for animal rescue. I want to help at-risk animals.

Interviewer: Do you have any shortcomings?

Rachael Ray: Well, it’s difficult for me to be critical of myself. I acknowledge that I cannot bake because it requires measured ingredients. Besides, I cannot make coffee and I often burn bread under the broiler.

Interviewer: Thank you for coming and talking to us, Rachael. Good luck!

Rachael Ray: Thanks. Goodbye!

Don’t forget that your opinion essay must include four paragraphs: an introduction, your personal opinion and reasons for it, some arguments for the other point of view and a conclusion.

IV. Подведение итогов

And now look at the blackboard and read the quotation by Confucius: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Do you agree with these words? At home I want you to write an opinion essay. Comment on the following statement.

Some young people say that they want their future job to be well-paid. Others believe that the most important thing is to love what you do.

What is your opinion? Write 200–250 words. Use the following plan:

make an introduction (state the problem);

express your personal opinion and give reasons for it;

give arguments for the other point of view and explain why you don’t agree with it;

draw a conclusion.

These words and word combinations may help you: to choose between love and money, to have great financial rewards, to satisfy the soul, challenging, to give smb an opportunity to do smth, to develop in new directions, poor working conditions, boring work, lack of communication, feel stressed, to earn much money, to be promoted.
