THE WORLD OF JOBS

17

May 2013

The Final Lesson

INTRODUCTORY NOTE (Слайды 1–3):

I am working in classes 6 through 9 using the school curriculum based on English course books by Afanasyeva and Mikheeva. I am aware that nowadays lots of authors work at high pressure to issue various teacher-friendly tests and I am grateful to them. But, for me, as a creative teacher, these tests are not enough. So I try my hand at composing my own and today I want you to see in detail the way I usually make up the tests.

The student’s book for the 8th grade consists of 6 Units. After covering one of them I check how well the pupils have digested the material given at the lessons. This is the reason I create final tests for each Unit. I am in the habit of making them up on one and the same pattern: checking vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening, using authentic recordings. As a home assignment, I ask the pupils to solve a crossword puzzle thought up by myself. They do this willingly at home and broaden their vocabulary.

And now let’s have a look at the tasks themselves. Task I checks the vocabulary studied. Taking the words to be learned, I think up a story with some plot. The students should fill appropriate words in the gaps, using the first letter as a clue. They try to recollect the required word without making a mistake. Task II checks grammar. I use the new words of the Unit to write sentences on all the grammar material studied in the Unit and the multiple choice quiz. Task III is centered on reading a text selected on the topic in question. The tasks to the text are compiled in the format of the State Exam: True, False, Not Stated statements and Multiple Choice questions. Task IV is aimed at listening. A text read by a native speaker is selected and it is a comprehension exercise. I use various approaches: answers to questions, putting sentences in proper order, rewriting the text in reported speech if the text is in dialogue, forming five types of questions for the text, and multiple choice tasks.

II. READING

Read the text and mark True, False or Not Stated (Слайд6).

Derek was a clever boy, but his parents were so poor that they could hardly keep their bodies and souls together. He had to work in his spare time and during his holidays to pay for his education. In spite of this, he managed to enter the University, but he knew that it would cost more money, so after weighing all the pros and cons, he decided to moonlight and work two jobs simultaneously. This idea did not frighten him at all as earning enough money to pay for his studies was his long-life dream.

Once in summer, strolling along a street, he noticed an ad posted on the shop window that said “A butcher’s assistant WANTED”. He popped into the shop, had a word with the owner and, luckily, got the position at once. It was a day job. Then, while waiting in a queue, he overheard that the local hospital needed male nurses and he immediately applied for the vacancy. This work at hospital was on night shift and that suited him greatly.

Derek’s work in the shop went well, as he followed the butcher’s directions in everything. Time went by and soon enough he learnt to cut meat up quite nicely. The butcher saw that the boy could handle the shop, so he did not think twice about leaving him to run the business while he went into the back room to do the accounts.

In the hospital his tasks were light and without anything serious appearing to be a matter of life and death. Frankly speaking, he was only allowed to do the simplest jobs, like helping to lift patients and carry them from one part of the hospital to another. For both Derek had to be dressed in white at the butcher’s shop and at the hospital.

One evening at the hospital, Derek was called to give a hand to carry a woman from her bed to the operating theatre. When Derek appeared in the doorway, he noticed that the woman was trembling all over. He assumed that the thought of the forthcoming operation frightened her so much that she was in danger of collapsing. He stood waiting till the moment the woman threw a glance at him. Her expression was one of complete horror and she yelled at the top of her voice, “No! No!” she cried. “Not my butcher! I won’t be operated on by my butcher!”

2.Whom will you hear? (a man called Toby)

3.What will he talk about? (his job as an engineer with a company called Atkins Engineering)

4.What do you have to do? (put a tick in the correct box for each question)

5.How many times will you hear the recording? (twice)

V. Read the questions and make guesses about what you will hear. Which of the following questions do you think the interviewer will ask Toby? Put a tick () next to them.

1.Is there anything about the job that you don’t like?

2.Why aren’t you working at present?

3.What do you hope to do in the future?

4.Is your job what you expected?

5.Did you want to be an engineer when you were at school?

6.How long have you worked for Atkins Engineering?

7.What is your opinion of the people you work with?

8.What kind of work do you do?

9.What do you like best about your present job?

10.Why isn’t engineering a very popular occupation with young people?

You will hear a man called Toby Merchant talking on the radio about his job as an engineer with a company called Atkins Engineering. For each question, put a tick in the correct box. You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions for Part 2. (See Handout 1)

Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice.

Interviewer: On Jobwise this week, Toby Merchant is going to talk about his job. Welcome Toby.

Toby: Thank you.

Interviewer: Now you work for a large engineering company called Atkins Engineering. How long have you been there?

Toby: I’ve worked there for three years. While I was at university I worked for a small company during the holidays. And when I left university they offered me a job. I stayed there for six months and then I succeeded in getting a much better job at Atkins Engineering.

Interviewer: What kind of work do you actually do? Toby: Most people in my company work on motorways and

road-building. But since I started here I’ve spent all my time working on the new airport. We haven’t finished the designs yet, so building won’t start for a while. In the future, I’d really like to work on something smaller like houses and flats.

Interviewer: And do you enjoy your job? Is it what you expected?

Toby: I do enjoy it and no, it’s not really what I expected. I thought I’d spend most of my time in the office designing buildings and roads and bridges. I was surprised to find that I actually spend a lot of my time discussing things with other people. I work very closely with architects, for example. And I’m mostly outside, away from the office.

Interviewer: Sounds interesting. It’s not a very popular occupation though, is it? Why is that do you think?

Toby: Most people know that engineers earn a good salary, so it’s not that. No, it’s because young people think it’s not going to be interesting. But I find it a very exciting job. And there are lots of opportunities for both men and women.

Interviewer: Are there any disadvantages to the job? Toby: Well, some people don’t like the long hours. That

doesn’t worry me because I love my work. What I find difficult is that I can’t plan my free time. Sometimes there’s an emergency or I have to travel to talk to someone. But I always look forward to going on holiday

– we have six weeks off a year so I can’t really complain!

Interviewer: Did you always want to be an engineer? Toby: I was always good at maths and science at school.

My father’s an architect and he was keen for me to do that but I wanted to do something different. So I was thinking of becoming a doctor. But I got a job on a building site after I left school and decided to be an engineer.

Interviewer: Thank you, Toby, for coming to talk ....

Now listen again. Answer the questions to the text.

1.Where did it work while he was at university? (for a small company)

2.Where did Tobi work when he first left university? (for the same small company)

4.Where did he get a job six months later? (at Atkins Engineering)

4.Is he working on the airport now? (Yes)

Miss Banner: Thank you for inviting me here today, Mr. Peacock. Well, first of all, I’d like to say that one of the best things about being a news reporter is that it’s so exciting. I get to travel around the world and meet lots of people. My job is interesting too. The news stories I do are different every day, so it never gets boring. Of course, there are disadvantages – as there are with any job. It is often very stressful as we have to do everything in a very short time. It can be dangerous, too, because we often have to work in places where there are wars.

Teacher: Thank you Miss Banner. Next we have Dr. Geoff Chalmers who is a surgeon at Branston City Hospital. Thank you for coming, Dr. Chalmers.

Doctor: Thank you. Well, I must admit that I am very well paid, but there’s a good reason for that: the job needs a lot of skill, and for that you need to spend many years studying. It’s a very rewarding job too as it’s great being able to save people’s lives. Unfortunately, there are also a couple of things that I don’t like much about my job. Firstly, it is tiring because we work long unsteady hours. It can also be stressful as you are responsible for people’s lives.

Teacher: Thank you Dr. Chalmers. Now, if you have any questions ...

XI. The lesson is coming to the end and I’d like to give you marks for your work…

Writing (Advantages and Disadvantages)

Before writing a composition about the advantages and disadvantages of a certain topic you should make a list of the good and bad points, giving reasons for each one. Start your composition by briefly stating the topic, then present the points for and against in two separate paragraphs, giving reasons. End your composition by restating the fact that the topic has both advantages and disadvantages. Remember to use appropriate linking words

(e.g. furthermore, to start with, also, what is more, on the other hand, in conclusion, etc). Also begin each paragraph with a topic sentence (a sentence which summarises what the paragraph is about).

XII. Home task: you are to write an article for your school magazine about the advantages and disadvantages of being either a reporter or a surgeon. Use the notes and the plan below to write your article. The beginning and ending, as well as the linking words/phrases, have been written for you.

ХОД УРОКА

I. Организационный момент (1 мин.)

Teacher: Good morning, students. Take your seats and get ready for the lesson. The theme of our lesson is “Choosing a Career”. You are leaving school next year, so choosing a career is a matter of great urgency for you. Let’s talk about it. (Слайды 1–3)

What shall we do during the lesson? We’ll talk about jobs and professions, practice asking and answering questions. You’ll listen to the conversations of three youngsters and discuss them. Then you’ll make up and act out a dialogue about your future plans. After the dialogue you’ll read a text and find out some characteristics matching to different jobs and the most important thing for making a brilliant career and gaining a success in the future. Now let’s start our lesson. Each of you has 3 papers. Fill in you names on them.

II. Warming-Up (7 мин.)

Teacher: What jobs do you know? Name at least three of them.

Student 1: A doctor, a librarian, a pilot.

Student 2: An economist, an accountant, a banker. Teacher: Oh, I’m sure you are going to work with money in

the future!

Student 3: A waiter, a shop-assistant, an actress, etc. Teacher: Let’s revise the rules of word formation. How are

the words of professions formed? (Слайд 4)

Student 1: There are many suffixes that can be added to a noun or a verb to form these words. For example: The endings -er or -or can be added to verbs to form the following nouns: reader, driver, teacher, sailor, actor etc.

Teacher: Let’s practice pronouncing these words (Слайд 5) (Учащиеся повторяют за учителем слова под ритмы синтезатора.)

Now look at the screen (Слайд 6). There are some words: a job, an occupation, a profession, work, a post, a career. What’s the deference between them?

The students read the words and their definitions. Let’s do an exercise (Слайд 7). Take Paper 1. Put the words into the sentences. One of the words can be used twice. I’ll give you two minutes. Then check your answers (Слайд 8).

III. Подготовка к основному этапу (8 мин.)

Teacher: Who knows how many jobs there are in the world? A hundred? A thousand? A million? Well just guess!

The students try to guess.

There are more than 2000 professions! It’s not easy to choose a job out of them. (Слайды 9–10)

Of course, you have changed your mind many times. I’d like to know what your choice was when you were 5 years old. What are you going to be now? Work in group of four or three. Fill in the table on Paper 1. One in each group interviews the others and fills in the table. Then he or she tells the class the students’ answers. You have 5 minutes to do this task (Слайды

11–12)

Follow the example: Ann is going to be an economist, but when she was 5, she wanted to be a ballerina.

Answer the teacher’s questions:

Do you want to go into the same field as your parents? How have your parents’ jobs affected your career choice?

What do your parents and friends think about your chosen career?

What’s more important to you – earning a lot of money or having a job that you enjoy?

What career would you definitely not like to do? How much do you want to earn?
