Unit 1.Your First Visit to a Dentist

  1. Read and translate the following text:

Teeth are very important, and it does not matter how old or young you are, you need to find a good dentist you can trust. Care should start from a very early age, and regular checkups are necessary.

It is recommended that a child see a dentist on or after his first birthday.Help your child prepare for his first visit to the dentist. Creating positive experiences in childhood helps to develop good dental habits in future. Get your child used to dental care by regularly cleaning your child's teeth using a soft bristled brush to remove plaque and stimulate the gums. If you are not doing this, begin using mild toothpaste specifically designed for young children.Make this a fun time by using a mirror and showing him how sparkly his teeth are after they are cleaned. We invite you to stay with your child during the initial examination.

Fear of visiting a dentist is very common among people, even in adults! If you are afraid of dentists then you should let them know, so they will help you to deal with your anxieties by explaining the whole procedure.Your first visit to a dentist will probably consist of collecting some basic information about your medical history, followed by a thorough examination.Once the examination is complete, your dentist will know if any work needs to be done in your mouth. He will discuss the different options with you so that you can choose the best one for you. Dentistry is constantly changing with the new technologies available, and if you have not been to your dentist for a while you may be surprised by what they can do these days.

After a visit to a good dentist your mouth will feel super fresh and clean, and you should feel comfortable with any possible procedures.Your teeth will thank you for it by lasting longer.

Sam: No, I had my teeth cleaned and checked last year.

Receptionist: OK, just a moment, I'll get your chart.

Sam: Oh, I changed my insurance. Here's my new provider card.

Receptionist: Thank you. Is there anything in particular you'd like the dentist to check today?

Sam: Well, yes. I've been having some gum pain recently.

Receptionist: Alright, I'll make a note of that.

Sam: ... and I'd like to have my teeth cleaned as well.

Receptionist: Of course, Mr. Waters, that'll be part of today's dental hygiene.

Sam: Oh, yes, of course.

Sam: Thank you.
