Theatre has always been important in Britain’s cultural life, and film and TV drama has its roots in the theatre. The most celebrated and creative name in British drama is Shakespeare. But he was not the only dramatist of his time, his rivals were Christopher Marlowe, Ben Johnson and others. The theatre flowered in the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. It was suppressed by the Puritans in the 17th century, but since that time it has been a popular art from up to the present day. Most periods have had their great playwrights: Sheridan, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw. Even when there was a lack of major British dramatists, theatre thrived on European drama classics.

Cinema has not destroyed live theatre, as some people might think. Theatre going actually increased during the 20th century, called the age of film. In London today there are over 100 theatres, which is more than other city in the world, including New York, has. Of course, the audiences are not all Londoners; the majority are foreign tourists.

Today, there are no fewer than 17000 amateur theatre groups in the country. Every school does drama – and the school plays can be extremely well-produced, with good lighting, music and costumes.

Theatre and cinema have a sort of symbolic relationship, with many actors, directors and writers doing both. Sir Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson and others had careers on the stage before going into films. And Hollywood stars like Nicole Kidman and Dustin Hoffman occasionally appear in small London theatres.
