hHOW to make a c
()rr()r m()\!~e
First you have to find a really 1 big sum of money preferably about half a million dollars, but you can make a movie for much less if you try. Then you need someone who can write a good story. The story must keep the audience 2interested and scared the whole way through. The characters must be believable and the events that take place should be 3frightening, so that the audience wants to see more. If the story's 4 bad, then you're not going to have a successful movie, however good the special effects are. OK, now you're ready to find some actors. It would be 5surprising if any top stars accepted your invitation to appear in your first movie, so look for actors who have only had 6 small parts in movies before. They won't complain when you're all outside in 7cold weather; filming a scene for the twentieth time. Don't give up. You may be
8 tired, but you could be the new James Cameron or Wes Craven!

The world's longest mail run
Eyery Saturday morning a small plane flies from Port Augusta on the South Australian coast into the outback. It carries letters and parcels to people who liye in the loneliest and most dangerous part of Australi~l. \\'riter 0,111 "vliddleton hitched a lift on the world's longest mail run.
'It W,lS 8.30 am ,1I1el 30°C when we took off from Port Augusta. It was hot and it was going to get hotter as we headed towards the great Austral ian outback.
For hours we flew across the bush, landing every now and then at a cattle station or a SIll,lJ1 town. In places the landscape looked exactly like the moon, and was just as empty. Some cattle stations, with their small homes in the middle of nowhere, seemed like the loneliest places on earth.
Our last stop was ~lt Birdsville, a small town on the edge of the desert. After Birdsville, you are literally 'on your own'. The town has a population of 70, and in
the summer the temperature reaches an incredible 50°C:. But this doesn't seem to worry the local people. The people I talked to were proud of Birdsville, with its primar~' school, its pub and its Flying Doctor selTice. >\lany of them worked for the cattle stations in the area .
.\fter Birds\'ille we headed back to Port Augusta ,llld civilis'ltion. The mail run had been an exciting experience. The dry, beautiful
landscapes, the wide open sp,lces and the interesting people are just some of the
things that make the Australian
.~outback unique.'

Read the text and answer the questions.
1How often is mail delivered to the Australian outback?
2What type of places does the plane stop off at?
3What does the writer compare the outback to?

8Planning and making decisions
Jane and Jim are organising a surprise party for Carla and Simon, to say goodbye and good luck. Number the lines of their conversation in the correct order.
A |
Jane |
All right! And if it's a beach party, we could |
have barbecue food. |
B.J ... Jim |
Right, let's plan what we're going to do. |
Why don't we have a party at school? |
C |
Jane |
Don't you think it would be good to record it |
somehow? |
D |
Jim |
Yes, burgers, steaks and salads. |
E |
Jane |
Let's invite everyone from our class. They'll |
all want to come to a party at Starstruck. |
F ...'f. ... |
Jim |
Oh, that would be great. Why don't I bring |
my camera and take lots of pictures? Then |
we could make a book each for Carla and |
Simon and all sign it. |
G ........ Jane |
Brilliant. It's going to be a great evening. |
H..... |
Jim |
Yes, of course. That's a great idea. It's |
much nicer than school. Who shall we |
invite? |
I..... |
Jane |
Don't you think it would be more fun if it |
was at the Starstruck Club? |
J ...7. ... |
Jim |
And why don't we ask them to dress up in |
beach clothes, and have an Australian |
beach party? |

Read part of the play Johnny and the Dead below. Some phrases have been left out from the text. Choose the right phrases A-H to fill the gaps. The first item (0) has been done for you as an example. There is one phrase that you will not need.
Johnny and the Dead is a funny play about 'progress' and change. Johnny is a teenager who finds he can talk to dead
people. In the story he 0 |
his friends when they |
find out that 1 |
('the cemetery') is going to be |
sold. This scene comes at the beginning of the play, when Johnny
2 |
that he can talk to dead people |
Scene 1 In the cemetery |
Grandad: 3................ ... , what the council are doing. |
Selling off this cemetery, and for what? Another |
flipping office block! There's history in here. |
Johnny: |
Alderman Thomas Bowler. |
Grandad: |
Never heard of 'im. I was referring to him. (he points to |
a headstone) William Stickers. |
Johnny: |
Was he famous? |
Grandad: |
Nearly famous. You've heard of KarllVlarx? |
Johnny: |
He 4 |
, didn't he? |
Grandad: |
Right. Well, William Stickers didn't. But he'd have |
been Karl Marx if Karl Marx hadn't beaten him to it. |
Grandad looks at the headstone, which is visible to the audience. It reads: 'William Stickers. 1897 - 1949. Workers of the world unit'.
Grandad |
Agreat man. |
Johnny |
(reading the writing on the headstone) 'Workers of the |
world unit'? What was the 'world unit'? |
William Stickers enters. Johnny sees him but does not react yet.
Grandad |
It should have been 'unite'. 'Workers of the world |
unite.' They 5 |
before they did the 'e'. |
6 |
He was a hero of the working |
class. He would have fought in the Spanish Civil War |
except he got on the wrong boat. I'm going down the |
shops. Want to come? |
Johnny |
No, thanks. Er... I'm going round to Wobbler's. |
