155. Sunstroke is a disorder of the brain produced by exposure to the direct rays of the sun oon the head. Animals that are tied out are most frequently affected. Cattle unaccustomed to being out in the sun are expecially susceptible.

156. Symptoms. The symptoms come on suddenly and depend upon changings in the brain. Overheating of the brain causes paralysis and death comes from involvement of the vital centres in this paralysis.

After being exposed to intense heat some animals show symptoms of hyperaemia, such as restlessness, excitement, forced movements and spasms of certain muscles; or there may be sudden apoplectic death; or death comes more slowly with the phenomenon of progressive paralysis of respiration. The pulse is weak. The temperature is normal or slightly deviated.

158. Treatment. Providing shade and applying cold packs to the cranial region, preferably ice packs. Cooling of the overheated centers. To combat the threat of respiratory and circulatory arrest, such central nervous system stimulants as amphetamine sulphate may be used.
