Russian College of Letters and Science *
As Russian society opens itself up to the outside world, exciting new learning opportunities present themselves to the Western World. The UC Davis Russian major presents the tools needed to enter careers in foreign affairs, world politics, and international trade as well as exposing its students to a culture rich in art, language and literature.
The Russian Department at UC Davis offers three distinct programs leading to the Bachelor of Art degree. The first program emphasizes mastery of the spoken and written language through courses in linguistics and translation. The second program combines language and literature courses to present a comprehensive background in Russian culture. The third program, Area Studies, includes courses in history, political science, economics and geography. All three major programs provide solid preparation for graduate work, and can lead to careers in international business and government.
The UC Davis program is distinguished by its progressive Russian language series which is designed to teach reading, writing and spoken Russian in two years; by its third year courses which bring students toward fluency through intensive drills in grammar, linguistics and conversation; by a wide variety of Russian and Soviet literature courses which develop students' abilities in literary and linguistic analysis; and by a variety of Russian and Soviet culture courses which enable students to gain insight into the Russian people.
Each academic year promises still further expansion and improvement of the program. The department receives broadcasts from Russian television. The department has a sophisticated computer support system that drills students on grammar, vocabulary and allows them access to especially adapted word processing programs. Also available is a "Russian Table" which serves as an informal weekly gathering at a local cafe.
Students who have completed two years of Russian language study can participate in the University of California Education Abroad Program at the Herzen University and the North-Western Centre of Public Administration in St. Petersburg. Each semester 36 UC students study the Russian language, phonetics, literature, area studies, and film in St. Petersburg and travel to other cities within the former Soviet Union. Many of our students also participate in summer semester and year programs, sponsored by the US government, in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
UC Davis Russian majors are granted opportunities to participate in internships allowing them to gain further practical experience in their specific area of interest.
Upon graduation, many Russian majors enter graduate programs in Slavic studies, international relations or international trade.
