NB! В английском языке существуют специальные способы выражения постоянных или повторяющихся действий в прошедшем. Это - used to + infinitive и would + infinitive.

Used (произносится [ju:st]) to + infinitive имеет одну форму — прошедшего времени. Действие же может происходить как в контекстах относящихся к настоящему периоду времени, так и к прошедшему. Употребляется с для выражения повторяющихся действий, которые могут быть либо точечными, либо длящимися.

"She used to give me chocolate," murmured Imogen.

I used to meet him sometimes when he was working on the Chronicle here.

He used reading in the garden.

I used to take out a deck-chair, sit under one of the apple-trees and read.

Иногда used to + infinitive с глаголом употребляющимся в длительных временах используют для выражения действий, дающих постоянную характеристику подлежащего в предложении, относящемуся к прошедшему. В этом случае оно указывает на различие между прошлым и настоящим. В этом значении оно используется обычно в контекстах относящихся к настоящему периоду времени.

I used to be as sentimental as anyone a few years ago," said Ann.

You wouldn't have the same comforts in the country, dear, I know.

I used to live there as a girl. I don't exactly hear as I used to.

Отрицательные и утвердительные формы used to + infinitive встречаются редко и здесь существуют отклонения в образовании.

Would + infinitive ограничено в употреблении, чем used to + infinitive. Эта конструкция встречается только контекстах, относящихся к прошедшему периоду времени, и употребляется для выражения только повторяющихся действий. Эта конструкция характерна для литературного стиля.

She would often wake up screaming in the night.

She seemed able to do nothing for an infinite time without feeling bored.

7. Для выражения длящегося действия в определенный момент в прошлом действий. Обычно это значение передается при помощи The Past Continuous . Но мы прибегаем к употреблению the Past Indefinite в следующих случаях:

a) Употребление the Past Indefinite становится обязательным с глаголами , которые не употребляются в длительных временах.

She sipped her coffee and pulled a face. She thought it tasted horrible.

She was ill at ease, and he felt sorry for her. He wanted all her troubles

for himself at that moment.

b) The Past Indefinite может быть употреблено вместо the Past Continuous с определенными глаголами, которые употребляются в длительных временах. Это: to sit, to stand, to lie, to hang, to shine, to gleam, to talk, to speak, to wear, to carry, to walk и тд.. В этих случаях действие только называется и присутствуют обстоятельства, при которых оно происходит, являющимися действительно важными.

Barbara and Basil sat in the garden after lunch. The smoke from Basil's

cigar hung on the humid air.

The lights in the house were out, but a rising moon gleamed against one window in the room where little Mary slept.

We went to the bus stop. The full moon shone down on the lightless blind-facedstreet.

His hair was newly cut, he wore a stiff white collar, a bowler hat, a thin gold watch-chain and other marks of respectability, and he carried a new umbrella. He talked with acute intensity. Her face was heavy: she spoke with deep emotion. He walked between us, listening attentively to our conversation.

8. Для выражения будущего действия, рассматриваемого с точки зрения прошедшего времени. Этот случай в употреблении применяется в косвенной речи. Встречается в придаточных предложениях времени, условия и тд.; the Future-in-the-Past или модальные глаголы употребляются в главном предложении в этом случае.

He knew that she was determined to marry him, and would, if she thought it useful, lie and cheat and steal until she brought it off.
