I. They are every young person’s nightmare, and they’re on the increase. They wear expensive trainers and tiny shorts, knee length black boots with pink mini-skirts, or tight jeans with T-shirts that are a couple of sizes too small. They never stop talking about MTV, youth TV and all the latest films for the under-20s. They own huge collections of pop CDs, listen to boy bands on their Walkman and have tattoos of their favourite groups. Nothing very strange, then, but there is something a bit odd about these people: nearly all of them are over 40. They’re part of that growing social phenomenon-parents who behave like teenagers.

II. Many teenagers find their parents embarrassing enough when they are just acting normally, without having to put up with them wearing hair extensions, noserings and tongue studs, squeezing into clothes designed for 16-year-olds and collecting them from school with last month’s hits blasting out from the car stereo. Worse still, whenever there is talk of an earlier decade coming back into fashion, out come the high-heeled shoes, the patterned tights and the narrow skirts; or the faded denim, the slim-fit shirts and the striped jackets. It doesn’t matter that the clothes no longer fit, the perfume is too young and make-up too heavy. It’s time to head down to the disco and remind the world what style really is.

III. The most important thing of course, is to ensure that newly-teenage parents are kept well away from the young person’s friends and – even more importantly-enemies. There are few sources of gossip as rich as badly-behaved mothers or fathers, so all risk of contact between the generations must be avoided. Especially at parties. Don’t ever let parents set foot in a house where teenage party’s being held. They are quite likely to say enough embarrassing things to keep the whole place laughing for hours, and the slightest possibility of them staying to have "just one dance" is too awful even to imagine.

IV. The best thing with parents like these is to take them to one side for a quiet word, explaining that if they behave exactly like teenagers it is impossible for their children to rebel against grown-ups. Reasonable mothers and fathers should understand that this just isn’t fair. Unreasonable ones may need more convincing, and might need to be advised a little more forcefully that they would look and feel a whole lot better in a nice woolen suit or cotton blouse rather than leather and the fur, the nylon and the plastic. And that nothing sounds worse than out-of-date slang.

V. If all else fails, and if they really do insist on being born-again teens of whatever generation, the only solution may be to tell them you accept the situation, and hope that they too will accept your decision if you decide to change your name and disown your family. And move to another country a very long way away.

2) young people wearing only old styles.

3) parents wearing only modern styles.

A39. Who minds if parents have outgrown their clothes?

1) The parents themselves.

2) Their children.

3) The parents’ friends.

A40. According to the writer, the teenagers’ main aim should be to prevent parents from

1) meeting other parents.

2) meeting their children’s friends.

3) going to discotheques.

A41. What is meant by the expression "If all else fails" in V?

1) If no one wants to help you.

2) If you have tried every other possibility.

3) If other people have tried unsuccessfully.

Street Markets

1. Chapel Street Market, Islington: Chapel Street is one of North London’s oldest street markets. Established well over one hundred years ago, it was recently threatened with closure by the local authority. The general public were so angry, though, that Chapel Market was saved. It has sections for vegetables, jewellery and many other items. There are even stalls selling souvenirs of Arsenal and Tottenham Football Clubs, the two great enemies of North London football. The owners of the stalls shout out what goods they have and try to tempt the shoppers with their competitive prices. Chapel Street Market definitely captures the atmosphere of a very special part of London.

2. Covent Garden Market: This is one of Central London’s most fashionable markets. Traditionally famous for its vegetables, fruit and flowers, it is now just as well known for its wide range of fashionable clothes and leather goods. On Thursdays, the only things you’ll find are antiques, and Covent Garden becomes London’s largest antiques market. Although this is not the case any more, Covent Garden was for decades the big collection point in London for vegetables, fruit and flowers. At about three o’clock every morning, hundreds of trucks would come and go, delivering these fresh goods to other street markets all over London. Nowadays, Covent Garden appeals mostly to tourists and other people looking for a special birthday or Christmas gift. But beware of the prices! Covent Garden goods are often overpriced.

3. Southall Market: This is one of London’s most exotic street markets. The area of Southall has one of London’s biggest Indian and Pakistani communities. They first started coming to this area in the 1950’s and since then have established a flourishing street market. The first thing you notice on entering the market are the wonderful smells of exotic spices. Everything you could possibly want to cook an excellent curry dish is laid out before you in thousands of containers. Simply approach the seller, tell him what you want and he will mix your very own bag of spices for you. The traditional Indian women’s dress, the sari, is sold in hundreds of different colours and patterns. Some are for everyday wear, while other more elaborate ones are for weddings and special occasions. These are truly fantastic.

4. Portobello Road Market: Portobello Road is without question the most trendy of all the London markets. It is situated in West London, and is of particular interest to the young and rebellious. In the 1970’s it was one of the few places where punks could buy all their clothes. When leather clothes became fashionable, Portobello Road was the place to find the strangest things. You can also buy exotic jewellery from all over the world. Another feature of Portobello Road are pubs. There seem to be dozens of them, and they are very popular places to meet friends in, either before or after you have done your shopping.
