6. This exercise is meant to test your ability to analyze and reproduce material for reading and retelling.

a). Read the jokes silently to make sure you understand each sentence. Find the sentence expressing the essence of the joke. Divide each phrase into intonation groups if necessary. Locate the communicative center of each sentence. Mark the stresses and tunes. Practise reading the joke.

b). Tell the joke in your own words.

A man dropped in to pay a friend an unexpected visit, and was amazed to find him playing chess with his dog. The man watched in silence for a minute, then burst out with “That’s the most incredible dog I ever saw in my life!” “ Oh, he isn’t so smart”, was the answer. “I’ve beaten him three games out of four!”

7. Listen to dialogue 42 from e.L.C. (Sports and Games)

a). Recognize the intonation pattern of each utterance, lay stresses and tone marks. Imitate and reproduce the dialogue in class.

b). Complete the following situations according to the dialogue. Check yourself against the key.

    1. – What would you say are the most popular games in England today?
