4. A). Listen to two dialogues. Repeat each utterance trying to watch pronunciation on the cassette. Practice reading the dialogues.

Dialogue 1

  • Oh, no. I don’t believe it! John, look at this!

  • What’s up?

  • I wish, you wouldn’t leave your mess lying everywhere. Just look at the state at this kitchen.

  • Hey! Oh, yes. Sorry about that. I was cleaning my shoes.

  • Well, you might have put everything away again.

  • Oh, yes. I suppose, you’re right. I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.

  • That’s not good enough. You’re always doing it. A trouble with you is you’re just lazy and inconsiderable. Mm, and look at that floor. Oh, I might have known it.

  • What about it?

  • It’s got boot polish all over it, that’s what. Oh, I’ve had enough of this. Why couldn’t you put some newspaper down? Why can’t you take a bit of care with things?

  • It wasn’t my fault. There wasn’t any newspaper.

  • Well, the why on earth didn’t you take more care?

  • Well, I did try. I’m terribly sorry, Mum. Shall I try and clean it up?

  • Oh, don’t bother. I’ll do it. I just wish you would be a bit more careful, that’s all.

  • OK, Mum. Sorry, Mum. Oh, Mum, have you pressed my suit yet? I left it out this morning.

  • Pressed your suit? That does it! That really does it. I’ve had enough of this.

  • Oh, so have. I don’t know why I don’t leave home?

  • Neither do I.

  • I wish you would.

Dialogue 2

  • John, I hear, you’ve been rude to your mother again.

  • Rude? Me? She’s the one who is always complaining and moaning of me! There’s no my fault if she’s neurotic.

  • That’s enough you seem to say.

  • Yes, I suppose you’re right. Sorry.

  • I mean, I don’t like to criticize, but it was a bit thoughtless of you, you must admit. You really should be more careful. And you certainly should have kept your temper with your mother.

  • Yes, you could have a point, I suppose.

But the trouble with mum is that she never knows when enough is enough.

  • I know, John. But put yourself in her shoes. Wasn’t very diplomatic of you to ask if she pressed your suit, was it? It was really a stupid thing to do in the circumstances.

  • I must admit it was a bit tactless.

  • Couldn’t you have pressed it yourself?

  • Well, I did try, but I don’t know how to press things properly.

  • Well, that might be an idea to learn. And also remember to clear up after yourself. And be more considerate to your mother. I mean, I’m sorry to have to say this, but you are becoming a very difficult person to live with.

  • Yes, all right. Point taken. Sorry, dad. It won’t happen again, I promise.
