Perm State Technical University is one of the largest technical higher educational institutions in Russia. It is well-known in this country and abroad for its achievements in the field of education, scientific research and engineering developments.

The University consists of 10 faculties including aerospace, electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanico-technological, mining and oil, chemico-technological, automobile and road building, the faculty of social sciences, physics and mathematics and pre-University training. It also comprises Regional Centre of New Informational Technologies, Republican Engineering Centre of Powder Metallurgy, Computing Centre, “Temp” Research and Development Bureau, Interbranch Centre of Specialist Upgrading, Research and Development Department, Engineering Centre of Applied Mechanics and some others. The University has branches in Berezniky and Tchaikovsky.

More than 60 000 highly-qualified engineers of 44 specialities have been trained at the University. They are employed in different fields of industry, civil engineering and transport. About 1200 teachers work at 78 University departments. 80 Doctors of science and 700 Candidates of science are among them.

The University has more than 40 training computing centres with 650 up-to-date computers, 350 lecture-rooms and 90 laboratories.

Highly skilled University personnel introduces advanced forms and methods of teaching, provides pre-University training and maintains close links with industrial enterprises. Recently 22 branches of University departments, 5 industrial training complexes, 4 training laboratories, 16 experimental workshops and “Yunost” plant have been opened in industrial works and research bureaus.

Scientific investigations are carried out in accordance with urgent needs of industry. The University staff contributes to the fulfilment of Government and Academy of Sciences research programs.

The principal trends of investigations carried out by the University include: economic aspects of technological development and management improvement of industrial enterprises, complex development of natural resources and environmental protection in the Perm region (special attention is paid to oil production and mining industry); perfection of design, building materials and structures, basements and foundations in civil engineering, water-supply and sewage systems, road-building; utilization of industrial wastes; modernization of machine-building technology, reliability and durability of machines and mechanisms, creation of special purpose engines and starting devices; automation and control systems and means, informatics and special systems of information processing and control; actual problems of sociology, philosophy, historical science, psychological and pedagogical problems of university education.

Numerous investigations and research programs accomplished at the University in the years of its existence have won recognition and found their practical application in industry. The University’s scholars have obtained about 2500 patents and certificates of authorship. They have published 350 monographs, 430 collected articles – more than 13000 papers have appeared in central publications. The results achieved are regularly presented for the public international, national and regional exhibitions. During the last 20 years more than 1500 exhibits were displayed.

Our scholars participate in international scientific conferences and congresses, the results of their research are protected by patents of many states in Europe, Asia and America. Among the teaching staff there are some members of international scientific associations.

Perm State Technical University has excellent educational, research and public facilities. It is fortunate in having 17 buildings with well-equipped laboratories and lecture halls – 10 of them are located in the picturesque pine wood on the right bank of the Kama. There also exist 10 experimental workshops, 8 hostels for students’ accommodation and 5 blocks of flats for the teaching staff to live in. At the disposal of students and their teachers there are 3 canteens, a kindergarten, sports facilities for skiing and rowing, a yacht-club, and a splendid summer camp “Polytechnic” in the outskirts of Perm near the Kama storage lake.

The University has its own night sanatorium providing facilities and medical treatment for 130 people simultaneously. The staff of the sanatorium makes use of modern medical equipment and progressive methods of cure.

Many lecturers and students are engaged in recreational activities in the framework of the Students’ Club composing more than 90 amateur talent groups as well as sports club and technical society numbering 30 different circles.
