Text 13.

Read the text and do the assignments. The Woolmark programme was introduced in 1964 by The Woolmark Company, then known as the International Wool Secretariat. The company, founded in 1937, is now the world's leading wool textile marketing organisation. Together with its well known trade marks, it is synonymous with research and development, innovation, promotion and quality assurance in pure new wool and wool blend products. It launched Woolmark to identify quality products made from pure new wool.

The Woolmark symbol was designed by Francesco Saroglia, an Italian graphic artist. The symbol is now registered in more than 140 countries. It is used by companies licensed by The Woolmark Company in more than 65 countries, across a wide range of products including clothes, carpets, home furnishings, washing machines and detergents. The Woolmark symbol appears on more than 300 million products every year.

Woolmark is identified as a quality assurance symbol, which gives consumers more confidence when buying clothes, and independent research confirms that over 40% are prepared to pay more for a piece of clothes labelled with the Woolmark than for an identical one without it.

The Woolmark Blend symbol was introduced in 1971 to identify quality products made from wool rich blends containing at least 50% new wool. The Wool Blend symbol was introduced in mid-1999 to extend the opportunities for wool offered by innovative, quality blends; Wool Blend is used to identify products containing at least 30% (but less than 50%) new wool.

Before you can use the Woolmark and other trade marks of The Woolmark Company you need to apply for a licence. You also need to be able to meet the quality standards demanded by the Woolmark programme.

Becoming a Woolmark licensee gives you access to the unrivalled technical and marketing expertise of The Woolmark Company, the product of more than 60 years' experience in scientific research, development and textile marketing innovation.Once you become a licensee:

  • You will be able to use the Woolmark symbol on your products to show that they meet the strict internationally recognised performance standards that we have laid down. You will also be able to use our other trade marks if you have been licensed for these as well.

  • You will have access to our worldwide sourcing service to help you locate suppliers and business partners, and technical advice and product information.

  • You will receive regular Woolmark Company forecasts, Wool Facts and Newsletters designed to keep you in touch with latest developments in the wool textile industry.

Exercise 13-1. Decide if the statements are true or false according to the text. Change any which are false.
