Фантастический процесc
В октябре 1717 года многие парижане останавливались около Дворца Юстиции, чтобы поглазеть на кареты, подкатывающие к подъезду. Богато одетые дамы и господа в париках быстро скрывалась за тяжелыми дверями зала заседаний.
Их привлек сюда иск некоего месье де Буассо, требовавшего вернуть ему жену Клеменс де ла Файль, умершую шесть лет тому назад и похороненную в аббатстве Сэн-Жерме-да-Пре. Истец утверждал, что женщина, которая находилась в зале суда в качестве обвиняемой, и есть Клеменс де ла Файлъ, хотя ответчица настаивала на том, что она является законной женой майора Жоржа де Гарана.
Предыстория процесса была необычной. За десять лет до этого, когда Клеменс исполнилось шестнадцать, ее отец, председатель парламента, овдовев, отослал дочь в семью родителей жены в город Тулузу. Там она встретила юного офицера Жоржа де Гарана. Молодые люди полюбили друг друга и вскоре объявили о помолвке. Но вдруг Жоржу велено было явиться в полк, чтобы отплыть в Индию. Молодой офицер умолял своего будущего тестя де ла Файля разрешить до отъезда сыграть свадьбу, но отец Клеменс остался глух к его просьбам. Он не хотел, чтобы дочь связала свою жизнь с офицером колониальных войск, чья судьба изменчива, а жалование невелико. Перед расставанием влюбленные поклялись друг другу в вечной верности.
Два года не было вестей от Жоржа. Затем пришло официальное сообщение о том, что полк в кровопролитном бою почти полностью уничтожен и капитан де Гаран погиб. Убитая горем Клеменс решила посвятить свою жизнь памяти жениха, но отец просьбами и угрозами добился своего: через год она стала женой пожилого дворянина месье де Буассо. А еще через год у Клеменс родилась девочка.
Но и став матерью, молодая женщина оставалась задумчивой и печальной. Она заболела; 13 октября 1711 года врач констатировал ее смерть. На следующий день состоялись похороны.
В этот же день вернулся из Индии Жорж де Гаран, которого все считали погибшим.
Узнав о кончине своей бывшей невесты, капитан с болью в сердце отправился на кладбище, где за большую сумму упросил сторожа открыть склеп, чтобы еще раз взглянуть на возлюбленную.
То, что произошло дальше, похоже на сказку о «Спящей красавице». Оказавшись в объятиях любимого, мнимо умершая ожила. Что там произошло в действительности, можно только предполагать. Точно установлено одно: спустя два дня де Гаран ступил на палубу корабля, отправлявшегося в Индию. Для всех он ехал один.
Прошло пять лет. Месье де Буассо в годовщину смерти Клеменс, как и в предыдущие годы, пришел на кладбище, чтобы возложить цветы на могилу супруги. У ее склепа он заметил молодую женщину под вуалью, склонившуюся над мраморной плитой. Услышав его шаги, она быстро поднялась, и Буассо показалось, что сквозь вуаль он узнал свою жену. С протянутыми руками шагнул он к незнакомке, но дама увернулась и быстрыми шагами направилась к выходу, где ее ждал экипаж.
Эта встреча не давала покоя Буассо. Чтобы убедиться в том, что он встретил не призрак и не страдает галлюцинациями, Буассо велел вскрыть гроб. Тела там не оказалось!..
Расследование было поручено уголовной полиции. Ее агенты установили: кладбище посетила жена майора Жоржа де Гарана. Недавно чета де Гаранов вернулась во Францию из Индии. Полицейские узнали, что прежний кладбищенский сторож умер, оставив должность за пять лет до кончины, потому что якобы получил наследство. К сведениям добавилось, что некогда капитан де Гаран отбыл в Индию за свой счет на купеческом корабле, а не на военном, и на том же судне с ним уехала больная женщина под темной вуалью.
Несмотря на все улики, Жорж де Гаран упорно защищался; он заявил в свое оправдание:
– Я не стал дожидаться военного транспорта по той простой причине, что после смерти моей бывшей невесты мне хотелось быстрее оставить этот печальный берег. Больная женщина, находившаяся на корабле, была англичанкой, которая ехала навестить своих детей за океаном. Как объяснить то, что гроб оказался пустым? На это я ничего ответить не могу. Может быть, могильщик польстился на украшения умершей, а труп закопал в одной из заранее приготовленных могил. Моя жена, дочь англичанина и испанки, родилась в Индии. Мы обвенчались в церкви губернатора штата Пондишери; вот наши документы.
Показания де Гарана звучали не менее убедительно, чем улика против него. И все же Буассо настаивал на продолжении процесса.
Мадам де Гаран тоже доказывала суду, что она не Клеменс де ла Файль. Но отец Клеменс, выступавший свидетелем на суде, был твердо убежден, что перед ним его дочь, и просил молодую женщину вернуться к законному мужу и своему ребенку. На все это мадам де Гаран отвечала: «Мой отец давно умер, а господина де Буассо я не имела чести знать». Симпатии публики и судей были на стороне мадам де Гаран.
Но в конце заседания случилось неожиданное: месье де Буассо ввел в зал свою семилетнюю дочь. Девочка шла по широком проходу, ее провожали сотни глаз; она приблизилась к стоящей перед судьями женщине и жалобным голосом произнесла: «Мама, неужели ты не хочешь меня поцеловать?»
Поведение обвиняемой выдало ее с головой: она задрожала, схватила ребенка на руки и с плачем начала целовать девочку. Через несколько секунд, овладев собой, мадам де Гаран оттолкнула ребенка и, обращаясь к публике, воскликнула: «Как не стыдно провоцировать женщину такими методами? Ведь каждая мать не осталась бы безучастной к чужому ребенку, если он плачет!»
Но суд вынес приговор: «признать мадам де Гаран, в девичестве мадемуазель де ла Файль, женой господина де Буассо и вернуть ее законному супругу и ее ребенку, наложив домашний арест на семью де Гаран во избежание бегства».
Клеменс подала прошение на высочайшее имя разрешить ей уйти в монастырь. В этой просьбе ей было отказано. Месье де Буассо уже праздновал победу и заявил, что прощает свою «заблудшую овечку». В этом безнадежном положении мадам де Гаран сделала вид, что примирилась со своей судьбой, и даже назначила день своего возвращения.
Вот как тогдашние газетные репортеры описывали последний акт этой трагедии: «В тот вечер перед ярко освещенным домом де Буассо, набитым знатью, остановилась карета. Из нее вышла Клеменс де ла Файль в белом подвенечном платье. Она была прекрасна и очень бледна, почти прозрачна, с горящими глазами и улыбкой на устах. Она сделала насколько шагов по ковру, устилавшему вестибюль. Навстречу ей спешил месье де Буассо с распростертыми объятиями. Взглянув не него холодно, она тихо произнесла: «Месье, я принесла вам то, что вы когда-то потеряли». И с этими словами упала на пол. В те же часы в парижском предместье Сан-Луи Жорж де Гаран умирал от принятого одновременно с женой яда».
