AT DINNER

Mother: The table is laid. Come along, both of you, and let us begin. It’s high time to have

dinner.

Father: I’m ready; I feel quite hungry.

Alec: So am I. I could eat a horse.

Mother: Well, we haven’t got a horse for you, but what we have got is quite nice. Your favorite

dishes will be served today.

Alec: What are they? I’ve got so many.

Mother: For the first course we shall have chicken soup and rissoles with mashed potatoes for

the second.

Alec: And for dessert?

Mother: I’ve got stewed fruit with cake.

Alec: Oh, that’s wonderful! It’s a pity you don t make stewed fruit more often. May I go and get

it now?

Father: Don’t he so impatient. Wart till we’ve finished the second course. Where is the salt,

please?

Mother: Alec, pass the salt-cellar to Father, please.

Alec: Here you are, Dad.

Father: Thank you, son.

Mother: Why don’t you help yourself to some salad, Alec?

Alec: You know I don’t like salad of any kind.

Mother: Here is your soup.

Alec: Thank you, Mother. May 1 trouble you for a piece of bread?

Mother: Brown or white?

Alec: Brown pleases. The soup is delicious today! It smells lovely, mum. May I have another

helping?

Mother: Certainly, dear, I want you to have a good meal. Any more soup for you, Father?

Father: No more, thank you. Where are the napkins?

Mother: They are in the sideboard drawer. I always forget to put them out.

Father: Never mind. Alec will fetch them, won’t you?

Alec: Here are the napkins, Dad.

Mother: Hand me your plate, dear, I’ll give you some rissoles. Will two rissoles do?

Alec: Yes. Mum ... And now may I have stewed fruit with cake which has been promised?

Mother: Take it from the fridge. I put it there to cool.

Alec: Oh, apricots and cherries!

Father: Thank you, dear, for a most delicious dinner.

Mother: Now Alec, I want you to help me clear the table. These plates, spoons, knives and forks

must be taken to the kitchen. This bread-basket, the salt cellar and mustard-pot must be put into

the sideboard.

Alec: I’ve done all that, Mum, What else?

Mother: Take the table-cloth and foul it neatly. Then put the chairs straight and sweep the room.

Table manners

Good table manners avoid ugliness. All rules of table manners are made to avoid it. To let anyone see what you have in your mouth is offensive. So is to make a noise. To make a mess in the plate is disgusting. So there are some rules how to behave yourself at the table: Do not attract undue attention to ourself in public. When eating take as much as you want, but eat as much as you take. Never stretch over the table for something you want, ask your neighbour to pass it. Take a slice of bread from the bread-plate by hand, don’t harpoon our bread with a fork. Never read while eating (at least in company). When a dish is placed before you do not eye it suspiciously as though it were the first time you had seen it, and do not give the impression that you are about to sniff it. Chicken requires special handling. First cut as much as you can, and when you can’t use knife or fork any longer, use your fingers. The customary way to refuse a dish is by saying “No, thank you” (or to accept “Yes, please”). Don’t say “1 don’t eat that stuff”, don’t make faces or noises to show that you don’t like it. In between courses don’t make bread-halls to while the time away and do not play with the silver. Do not leave spoon in your cup when drinking tea or coffee. Do not empty your glass too quickly it will he promptly refilled. Don’t put liquid into your mouth if it is already full. Don’t eat off the knife. Vegetables, potatoes, macaroni are placed on your fork with the help of your knife. If your food is too hot don’t blow on it as though you were trying to start a campfire on a damp night. Try to make as little noise as possible when eating. And, finally, don’t forget to say “thank you”.

English table manners

1. Don’t pu your elbows on the table.

2. Sit facing the table and keep your feet under you, don’t stretch them all the way under the table.

3. Never stretch over the table for something you want, ask your neighbour to pass it.

4. Take a slice of bread from the bread-plate by hand, don’t harpoon your bread with a fork.

5. Don’t bite into the whole slice, break it off piece by piece.

6. Vegetables, potatoes, macaroni are placed on your fork with the help of your knife.

7. Cut your meat into small pieces that can be chewed with easy. Cut off one piece at a time.

8. Chicken requires special handling. First cut as much as you can and when you can’t use knife and fork any longer, use your fingers.

9. Don’t use a knife for fish, cutlets or omelettes.

10. Don’t eat off the knife.

11. Don’t lick your spoon. Try to make as little noise as possible with your mouth full.

12. Never read while eating (at least in company)

13. Never spoil your neighbour’s appetite by critisising what he is eating.

14. The customary way to refuse a dish is by saying: “No, thank you (or to accept, “Yes, please” or “With pleasure”). Don’t say, “I don’t eat that stuff,” and don’t make faces to show you don’t like it.

15. If you really feel hungry ask for a second helping. And finally, don’t forget to say “Thank you.” for every act of kindness.

16. After stirring your tea remove the spoon, and place it on the saucer.

17. Don’t use a spoon for what can be eaten with a fork. The forks are placed at the side of the dish in the order in which they are to be used (salad fork, fish fork, meat fork, etc).

By the way, English people do not wish each other “Good appetite.”
