VIII. Read the additional information about the Faculty of Chemistry and its activity. Translate the texts from English into Russian.

The Faculty of Chemistry at Kemerovo State University comprises five main chairs which are involved in studying some specific aspects of chemistry.

The Chair of Inorganic Chemistry is the centre of fundamental research in photographic chemistry. It carries out experiments and investigations into creating a variety of films1 used in industry. Some researchers examine chemical principles of image formation2: preparing of emulsions, sensitization3 of emulsions, photographic layer development4. Special attention is devoted to the study of photochemical processes in gases.

The Chair of Inorganic Chemistry also studies diverse aspects of chemistry associated with Mendeleyev’s Periodic Table of Elements. The subjects investigated from the scientific point of view include the properties and structure of aqueous solutions, the chemistry of rare metal oxide compounds, the chemistry of complexes.

Vocabulary notes:

1 film – пленка

2 image formation – образование (формирование) изображения

3 sensitization – сенсибилизация (повышение светочувствительности)

4 photographic layer development – образование фотографического слоя

The Chair of Organic Chemistry provides training of students in the fields of theoretical organic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry and organic analysis. The most part of research is related to the structure and reactivity of organic compounds. It also concerns the development of new methods in synthetic organic chemistry. The staff of the Chair is engaged in studying aliphatic compounds5, the chemistry of alkenes6, the application of gas chromatography7. They use chemical as well as physical methods of investigation: organic synthesis; mass spectroscopy8 (MS), ultra-violet (UV) spectroscopy9, infra-red (IR) spectroscopy10, nuclear magnetic resonance11 (NMR). Also, the researchers examine these methods and search for new possibilities of their application.

The investigations of the Chair of Organic Chemistry are of great value. So, some of them are awarded special grants.

Vocabulary notes:

5 aliphatic compounds – алифатические соединения

6 alkenes – алкилаты

7 chromatography – хроматография

8 mass spectroscopy – масс-спектроскопия

9 ultra-violet spectroscopy – ультрафиолетовая спектроскопия

10 infra-red spectroscopy – инфракрасная спектроскопия

11 nuclear magnetic resonance – ядерно-магнитный резонанс

The Chair of Analytical Chemistry was founded in 1978. It introduces the general theoretical concepts of analytical chemistry into training specialists through lectures and laboratory classes. Laboratory work is connected with the quantitative and qualitative analysis12 of inorganic substances. In the laboratories of inorganic chemistry the students learn to use methods of separation (for example, chromatography) and concentration. The researchers of the Chair take part in the development of new methods applied in analytical chemistry. Every year a great deal of research is aimed at detection and identification of elements.

The major interests of investigations cover such scientific aspects as photochemical behaviour of radioactive substances, particularly radioactive analysis of actinide13 and transuranium elements, solid electrolytes and others.

Vocabulary notes:

12 quantitative and qualitative analysis – количественный и качественный анализ

13 actinide – актиниды

The Chair of Solid State Chemistry was established in 1978. The scientific work of the Chair is concentrated on examining stability of solids under radiation and ionic effect of energy factors. The scientists here formulate the fundamentals of solid state chemistry based on the conclusions from their research. Students are given lectures on general theoretical concepts of solid state chemistry. Their laboratory work concerns chemical processes in solids including excitation, migration, relaxation and localization of exitons in solids. Students also study some chemical changes in solids, for example, thermal, photochemical, radiation-chemical14, electropolar etc.

The results of these investigations at the Chair of Solid State Chemistry are of scientific and practical significance for the cosmonautics and different related areas15.

Vocabulary notes:

14 radiation-chemical changes – химико-радиационные изменения

15 related areas – родственные области

The Chair of Physical Chemistry was established in 1974. It focuses on studying alpha, beta, gamma effect of different energy factors (ionic radiation, laser radiation) on organic and inorganic systems. There are several laboratories which belong to the Chair of Physical Chemistry. They are intended for the study of thermodynamics, kinetics, electrochemistry. In these laboratories students learn to use spectroscopic, optical and pulse methods16 for their research.

The staff of the Chair carries out scientific work linked with electrolytic and non-electrolytic solutions, distillation processes, electrosurface properties17 of dispersed systems. They develop new methods of investigation into dispersed systems. Some of them are interested in studying photographic processes in silver halides18, heavy metal azides19 by means of electron and infra-red spectroscopy techniques20.

Vocabulary notes:

16 pulse methods – пульсометрические методы

17 electrosurface properties – поверхностно-электрические свойства

18 silver halides – галогениды серебра

19 heavy metal azides – азиды тяжелых металлов

20 technique – метод, прием
