Unit 8 – learning lessons core vocabulary

School (n) 1) учебное заведение, школа; занятия в школе, уроки

at/ in school The kids will be at school until 3.00 today.

start/ leave school – пойти в школу/ закончить школу

Note: Comprehensive schools in the UK are for all abilities, but grammar schools are usually by competitive entry. Public schools in the UK are very famous private schools.

Note: In the UK, a college usually means a place where students over 18 are trained in a particular subject or skill, earning a qualification that is not usually an academic degree. People studying for an academic degree go to a university. In the US, a college is a place where students can earn a bachelor’s degree, and a university offers both bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees.

University (n) – университет the University of Leeds; He studied at Bristol University.

be at university – учиться в университете They met while they were at university.

go to university – начать обучение в университете

He’s taking a year off before going to university.

Graduate (n) 1) (Am) выпускник средней школы, колледжа a high school graduate

Note: In the UK there are usually three terms: the autumn term, the spring term, and the summer term.
