А. Конституція США висуває такі вимоги до кандидатури на посаду президента: особа має бути не молодшою за 35 років, народженою в США та проживати у країні щонайменше 14 років. Кандидати на посаду президента обираються політичними партіями шляхом попередніх виборів за кілька місяців до президентських виборів, які проводяться кожні чотири роки (в роки, які діляться на 4) в перший вівторок після першого понеділка листопада. Двадцять друга поправка, ратифікована у 1951 році, обмежує президента двома термінами перебування на посаді. Хоча імена кандидатів з’являються в бюлетенях, громадяни формально не голосують безпосередньо за президента та віце-президента. Замість цього виборці кожного штату вибирають президентських «виборників», кількість яких дорівнює кількості сенаторів та представників від відповідного штату в Конгресі. Кандидат із більшою кількістю голосів у кожному штаті отримує всі «голоси виборників» від цього штату. Після цього виборники збираються у столиці штату одразу після виборів і віддають свої голоси за кандидата, який отримав більшість голосів на загальних виборах у своєму штаті. В. Вибори до Конгресу відбуваються кожні два роки. Конгрес складається з двох палат: Сенату та палати представників. Сенат налічує 100 членів, які обираються на шестирічний термін у двомандатних виборчих округах (2 кандидатури від кожного штату), одна третина з яких оновлюється кожні два роки. Таким чином, дві третини сенаторів - це завжди особи з певним законодавчим досвідом на національному рівні. До прийняття сімнадцятої поправки до конституції США у 1913 році сенатори обиралися законодавчими органами штатів, а не безпосередньо електоратом штатів. Сенатор не повинен бути молодшим за 30 років, має бути громадянином США протягом щонайменше 9 років і мешканцем (юридично) того штату, який він представляє, палата представників налічує 435 членів, які обираються на термін у два роки в одномандатних виборчих округах. Вибори до палати представників відбуваються кожні 2 роки у перший вівторок після першого понеділка листопада у парні роки. Вибори до палати проводяться за мажоритарною системою у кожному з 435 округів, на які поділені Сполучені Штати. Позачергові вибори можуть проводитися, якщо член палати помирає або подає у відставку під час перебування на посаді. Конституція зазначає, що члени палати представників повинні бути не молодшими 25 років, бути громадянами США принаймні 7 років і проживати (юридично) у штаті, який вони представляють. Штати можуть висувати додаткові вимоги щодо обрання до Конгресу, але конституція надає кожній палаті повноваження визначати вимоги до своїх членів.
