After all you have told me I’m under the impression that your people are amusing themselves the year round, attending those festivals, concerts, exhibitions and championships. I’m afraid, it is far from being so. Vitebsk is a large industrial and educational cente. There are over 60 enterprises that produce furniture, TV-sets, machine-tools, carpets, textiles, knitwear, footwear, clothes and a lot of other goods. Are all of the enterprises state-owned? Most of them are. But there are a lot of joint-stock companies and 23 joint ventures. In fact Vitebsk has 1280 enterprises that are not state-owned. Besides, Vitebsk can be justly called a town of students. Really? Are there so many students in your town? We have four state higher schools here - one academy and three universities and there are also branches of some non-state higher schools. And what spesialists do they train? Vitebsk State University where I study trains schools teachers of all subjects, lawyers, psychologists, sociologists, museum specialists and tourist guides. Your town seems to have so many enterprises of light industry. Where do you take specialists for them? Well, Vitebsk Technology University trains technologists, economists, designers and engineer-mechanics. And the Academy of Veterinary Medicine trains future vets and zootechnicians. So you have named three higher schools. And what is the foursth one? It is the Medical University, the graduates of which are pharmaceutists and doctors of all specialities. The teaching staff of this University is highly qualified and international conferences are often held there. I see you do have a lot of students. And where can I spend my free time to-night, Kate? You can enjoy a concert at our Philarmonic or a play at our Yakub Kolas Drama Theatre. We also have Lyalka Puppet Theatre, the performances of which are enjoyed by children and their parents. The last one is not for me, I suppose. Let’s find out what’s on at the Drama Theatre. |
