221B Baker Street.
In the 1880s a young doctor wrote stories about a man who was very good at solving crimes. These stories were so popular that the doctor decided to give up medicine and become a writer instead. The doctor was Arthur Conan Doyle and his creation was Sherlock Holmes. Holmes and his equally famous friend Doctor Watson shared rooms at 221b Baker Street. And, as you know, their landlady was the long-suffering Mrs. Hudson. The Museum at 221b Baker Street was at last opened in 1990. Here you step back a hundred years in time. The atmosphere is special and electric. You have a feeling as if the great detective had just left the room for a moment with Dr. Watson, and Mrs. Hudson is somewhere in the house. Everything in the museum reminds us of the stories we know so well. There are a lot of things that Holmes and Watson would have had – Holmes' violin, pipe, his magnifying glass, unanswered letters...
The Sherlock Holmes Museum is unlike other museums. You can sit in Holmes' armchair by the fireplace; you can examine his things and put on his hat.
People have been writing to this address for the last 100 years. Many correspondents ask if Mr. Holmes can help them with some problems. Greeting cards arrive at Christmas and on Holmes' birthday. This year the museum is opening an exiting exhibition displaying scenes and familiar figures from Doyle's stories.
A lot of people all over the world are fond of stories about Mr. Holmes. And Holmes' fans form clubs and societies in memory of the great detective. They study his life, his methods, his strong and weak points, his taste in food, clothes, music, his thoughts of human nature and life in general. Besides you can find many sites with Sherlock Holmes in the Internet.
Notes:
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Holmes is the most portrayed character on the screen. More than 75 actors played the famous detective in more than 211 films.
Sherlock Holmes had a prototype. It was a famous Edinburgh surgeon, Dr Bell. Holmes never said "Elementary, my dear Watson!″ He said 'Elementary' and
