Read the letter to Francisco and write a letter to an American undergraduate who majors in Russian Literature and has asked your advice on what he/she should read.

Dear Francisco,
I'm glad to know you enjoyed the books I sent you for Christmas.
You ask me for advice on reading. That's a very difficult request. I always hesitate to advise my friends on what to read. How can I possibly know what will interest other people? And you don't say in your letter whether you want to read fiction, or drama, or essays, or books on travel.
What you do say is that you're fond of reading, and I'm delighted by that. Do you know the essays of Francis Bacon who lived about the same time as Shakespeare? They're full of good things about reading. Here are some of them, from the essays "Of Studies".
"Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested".
"Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe or take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider".
I cannot give you advice better than that. The first quotation tells you how to read books of different kinds. I suppose most travel books are "to be tasted"; it is enough to dip into them and read bits here and there. If you're fond of crime stories (A. Christie, G. Simenon, and the rest of the modern favourites), you will, if you’re like me read them quickly; you’l1 ‘swallow’ them. And then there are books that you’ll read slowly and carefully. If a book's on an important subject, and a subject you are interested in, you'll want to chew and digest it. And you'll want to weigh what the author says, and consider his ideas and arguments.

A: We must control and supervise their reading, select their reading-matter carefully. They must read only the best authors, first-class literature, thought-provoking books.
B: It doesn't matter what they read as long as it is a book. A crime story may lead to serious books.

Comment upon the statement: “So long as there are readers trying this and that, there is hope for literature.” In what way do you understand it?
Interview 10 people (first-year students, your relations, friends, etc.) to find out how they select books.
You might offer them the following questionnaire.
"How do you decide most often whether to buy/read a book or not?
a. I like its cover.
b. I have already read something else by the author and liked it.
c. I like the title.
d. I like the illustrations.
e. The publisher's description on the cover and on the facing page make it sound interesting.
f. On the basis of someone else's recommendation.
g. other (please specify)”
Be prepared to report the information to the class.
How do you select books? What is the best method, do you think? Do you take other people's opinions about what books to read? Why or why not? If you do, whose opinion do you take? What do you think of the following opinion expressed by Virginia Woolf in one of her essays: "The only advice that one person can give another about reading is to take no advice, to follow your own instincts, to use your own reason, to come to your own conclusions."
Does the choice of books characterize the reader? Support your statement.
