Act it out
Take part in the Role-Play “Talking about Reading Books in the Train”.
During a railway trip you talk about book-reading to your fellow passengers.
Role 1: A mother who is greatly concerned about her ten-year-old, Davie, spending too much time on TV watching. He is absolutely indifferent to books. The mother wonders what is to be done to get the boy to read. His future life as a non-reader looks to her empty and cheerless.
You May Use the Following Language:
To live through the eye
He is the slave of the box; glued to the screen
I am at my wits' end
He never as much as opens his book
Of course, reading requires an effort, and .../but ...
To get him interested in ...
No matter how hard I try ...
His grades at school are getting worse and worse
Role 2: A mother whose boy of 12 is immensely fond of books and spends all his time in reading, wonders what is to be done to cut his reading. She believes the habit unnatural and unhealthy in a young boy.
You May Use the Following Language:
a real book worm
I wished he watched TV some time, for a change
He reads all he can get/lay his hands on. Why, the other day I caught him reading ...

I gave it to him well
Normal kids play football after school.
to sit/stay indoors
Role 3: A young man, an out-of-doors type, who is not at all a great reader, but likes a good detective story. Considers serious reading - fiction, historical novels, memoirs, etc. to be boring stuff whose worth is greatly exaggerated by literary snobs.
You May Use the Following Language:
not much spare time
must keep fit, body-building
not the one for books
as dull as ditch water
sends me to sleep
I can do with a good detective story
It thrills me no end
The highbrows make no end of fuss about...
Role 4: A school teacher of literature who passionately loves books and does her best to make her students love them. Feels a certain concern seeing their obsession with TV and other visual entertainments.
You may Use the Following Language:
Of course, the visual sense must be developed and satisfied but…
What worries me is ...
The ability to lose oneself in books is ...
