2. Listen to Alice’s song and focus on some language features.

1. Put down the adjective describing Alice’s cat Dinah.

2. Pick out the adjective which is not to be found in the dictionary but is formed by Alice by analogy with words of this kind.

3. Explain the metaphoric meaning of the following expressions:

a) the silky shadow of fur

b) there’s never been a lady in waiting like her

Passage 2

1. Listen to another extract from the fairy-tale. Trace down the events that happened to Alice and recall them by answering the following questions:

1. What happened to Alice when she was sitting on the bank with her sister?

2. What was there so very remarkable about the White Rabbit that Alice saw suddenly?

3. Why did Alice want to offer help to the White Rabbit?

4. Why do you think Alice wasn’t very much surprised by the sight of the White Rabbit itself and its clothes?

2. Listen to the White Rabbit’s song and say what kind of person the White Rabbit reminds you of? Use the prompts given below:

a person assuming an air of importance, boastful, self-conceited, thinking highly of himself, indecisive, unconfident.

3. Listen to the song again.

1. Put down the words that reveal the White Rabbit’s character.

2. Point out the means used by the author to achieve a comical effect and to show his ironical attitude to the character.

4. Choose the suitable answer and prove it by the text:

a) the use of paradoxes and puns

b) the use of words whose inherent meaning is that of mockery and irony

c) discrepancy between simple and insignificant contents and high-flown, pompous vocabulary

1. Listen to another extract from “Alice in Wonderland”. Say what happened to Alice further answering the questions that follow:

1. What did Alice do when she saw the White Rabbit disappear down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge?

2. What feelings did Alice have as she was falling down the hole?

3. Did Alice’s fall end successfully or did she hurt herself?

4. When did Alice find herself after she raced round the corner on seeing the White Rabbit?

5. Why was Alice worried when she tried each door of the long hall?

6. What curious things did Alice suddenly see before her eyes?

7. What was the trouble with the door that Alice opened with the little key?

8. What happened to the little girl when she drank from the bottle labelled “Drink me”?

9. Did she finally get into the lovely garden through the little door?

10. What could Alice do to grow larger? Was there anything else to do but eat the cake labelled “Eat me”?

11. Why was Alice upset as she grew larger?

12. Did Alice finally realise that crying wouldn’t get her into that lovely garden?

2. Listen to the same extract again and focus on some text features. Pick out and put down word combinations and phrases:

a) through which the author helps the listener to understand Alice’s actions and feelings

b) which add to the expressiveness of the language (metaphors, comparisons, idioms) and make up the specific characteristics of the fairy-tale style (repetitions, exaggerations and intensification of qualities, specific syntactic constructions). Check your work with the key.
