Even the unauthorized photocopying of newsletters and published articles can cost the organization large sums of money. Texaco, for example, lost a lawsuit filed by publishers of scientific journals, who claimed that the company violated the copyright law by permitting employees to photocopy articles for their files. Such lawsuits can be avoided if an organization orders quantity reprints from the publisher or pays a licensing fee permitting it to make paper or electronic copies.
