Reaming is an operation where drilled or rough bored holes are finished to size using a multi-toothed cutter. A reamer is used as a hole finishing tool and removes only the minimum of stock.
There are hand and machine reamers, chucking reamers, gun reamers, super finishing reamers, various expanding reamers, micro reamers and solid shell reamers.
All are available in such materials as solid carbide or tipped, diamond impregnated etc. and all suit a wide range of materials and applications.
The widest range of application must be for the standard solid machine reamer.
When special diameters and tolerances are required the reamer can either be a special made for the job or one of the many types of adjustable reamers can be used.
In all reaming operations most metal is removed by the tapered front section of the reamer.
Flutes can be straight for most general machining, right hand helical flutes are used when reaming ductile or abrasive materials.

PERA Reamer
One of the better known solid reamers is the PERA reamer developed by Production Engineering Research Association and now produced by a number of well known tool manufactures. The main feature of the PERA reamer is that it has been designed to ream at high penetration rates while maintaining hole size.
Penetration rates can be as high as six times those of conventional reamers.
Right-and left hand helical flute reamers can be used for stock removal to provide exceptional surface finish.
Combination reamers include such features as a straight fluted cutting end with the back guiding portion of the flutes helical. This configuration is suited to drilling longer boles. Also available is a combined high speed drill reamer.
Adjustable Reamers
Adjustable or expanding reamers can be considered in two categories for different reaming applications. The adjustable reamer is not primarily intended for adjustment in use on the machine tool. The main purpose of the adjustment is to enable the reamer to be expanded and then reground to the original size. This operation can be done a number of times thus ensuring considerably longer tool life than with a solid reamer.
The expanding reamer usually has inserted blades, either stellite or carbide tipped, which are adjusted simultaneously along a taper.
Adjustable Floating Cutter
This type of reamer can be used for non-standard diameters or where frequent machine adjustment is necessary to maintain size during extended production runs. The adjustable floating cutter comprises two flat blades mounted in a boring bar.

Half Round Drills and Gun Reamers
These are two types of cutting tools which produce extremely accurate finished holes. The gun type reamer is a half-round tool. This form is recommended because a higher percentage of hole diameter has to be removed on holes between 0.010 and 1/8 in. d. than on larger sizes.
The ball form gives a high point angle at the periphery with a short cutting length at the point of stock removal. The gun reamer will simultaneously drill and ream in one pass on shallow holes.
Gun reamers are used for deep hole boring. The single carbide cutting tip is in advance of the two bearing pads which support and guide the tool during cutting. Swarf produced by this process must be washed away from the cutting edge by a constant flow of coolant.
For asbestos materials standard machine reamers can be used or carbide tipped tools are recommended to minimize wear and maintain accuracy. In all applications the cutting speed should be between 400 and 500 ft/min.
High speed steel reamers should be used when reaming ferramic alloys. Cutting speed should be as low as 15 to 25 ft/min with feed rates of 0.015 to 0.030 in/rev depending upon diameter. A good quality oil should be used as both coolant and lubricant.
