  1. Look at the words below and decide which are good or bad for the environment.

acid rain factories

recycled paper bottle banks

litter sprays

solar panels conservation

traffic jam chemicals

bicycles ozone layer

global warming exhaust fumes

  1. Think of three environmental problems. Say:

  1. the name of the problems

  2. any information you have about the problems

3. A) Match the headlines to the environmental problems.

a) Push for whale sanctuary in South Pacific

b) Greenhouse gases blamed for sudden storms

c) World to face water shortages by 2025

d) More land off limits for loggers

e) Population will rise to 10 billion people in next 50 years

Problems

Overpopulation ….................... Deforestation …......................

Lack of resources........................ Endangered species ….............

Global warming …....................

b) Answer the following questions using the phrases from “Useful language”. 1. Which of these problems do you think is the most worrying? 2. Who do you think is responsible for solving these problems?

  1. Match the problems to their effects and their solutions. Then in pairs discuss, as in the model.

Problems Effects Solutions

Hunting/Overfishing ….. …..

Global warming ….. …..

Deforestation ….. …..

Pollution ….. …..

Effects

  1. destruction of the rainforest

  2. many animals and fish wiped out

  3. change in world's climate – ocean levels rising – extreme weather conditions

  4. very poor air quality in cities – rivers and lakes full of industrial waste

Solutions

a) have stricter laws and harsher punishments for illegal hunting and fishing;

b) encourage countries to control the number of trees that are cut down;

  1. reduce gases emitted from factories. Use public transport instead of cars;

d) use alternative sources of energy.

A: What is the effect of deforestation?

B: Deforestation is causing a destruction of the rainforest. We should remember that forests support biodiversity, providing habitat for wildlife. Besides, rainforests are lungs of our planet. We need to do something before it's too late.

A: What can we do?

B: We could encourage countries to control the number of trees that are cut down. etc.

4. Work in pairs. Think of ways that we can: create less litter; reduce ground/air pollution; save on water; conserve our non-renewable resources. Then ask and answer, as in the example, using the following expressions:

Why don't we …

It would be a good idea to …

We can …/could also …

If …, then …

Perhaps we should ...

A:What can we do to conserve our non-renewable resources?

B: It would be a good idea to switch off the lights when we leave a room.

A: That's true, we could also … etc.

5. What should or shouldn't we do in order to protect the environment? Use the given prompts to answer the question.

cut down; destroy; plant; protect; recycle; save; throw away; waste

We should We shouldn't

….. tropical rainforests ….. energy

….. more trees ….. plastic bags

….. paper ….. trees

….. endangered species such as pandas ….. forests

6. Find information about some endangered species. Be ready to speak about their habitats, who hunts them and why, the effects of environmental problems.

7. Read the quotations below. Choose one of them and give your point of view on the issue.

"The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them." - George Bernard Shaw

"The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man." - Charles Darwin

“There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.” ~Mohandas K. Gandhi
