READING

  1. Organisation chart is a diagram that shows the structure of a company. Read the text about the Satjet Company and complete the organization chart below. Satjet

Satjet Company

Satjet is a company that produces spare parts for planes. The company is divided into several departments such as: Production, Research and Development, Human Resources, Finance, Logistics, Marketing and IT. Each department has a particular function and is headed by a director who is responsible for all the activities in the department. For example, the R&D director is in charge of improving existing products and developing new ones. The Finance director is responsible for the financial condition of the company, such as giving money to purchase the necessary materials and equipment. The IT director takes care of the company’s information systems and so on. Some departments have one or more subdivisions which perform specific functions. For example, the Training subdivision inside the HR department helps employees to acquire new skills and provides training to new employees. The Logistics department includes the Purshasing division, which buys materials and equipment for the company, and the Warehouse, which stores products manufactured by the Production and materials bought by Purchasing.

The company directors report to the chief executive officer (CEO) who is the head of the company. The CEO is responsible for the general day-to-day running of the company.

Miranda Thomas is the Marketing director at Satjet. She is responsible for presenting, advertising, and selling the company's products. 35 people work under Miranda including the Sales manager, who is in charge of sales, the Customer Service manager, who deals with customers’ complaints, and her PA – personal assistant – Janet.

Janet helps Miranda with her work. She is in charge of organizing Miranda’s meetings and presenting diagrams and graphs when Miranda speaks. Janet also arranges Miranda’s business trips, welcomes her visitors, receives calls and takes messages for her boss.

Miranda works very closely with the other directors, especially the Production director – Carlos Sonera. There are four production managers, a Quality control manager and 80 production workers who report to him. Mr. Sonera has a personal assistant too. Her name is Susan Becket. Susan’s responsibilities are the same as Janet’s.

The life of the directors would be more difficult without their assistants. Although the word ‘assistant’ doesn’t sound very important, they play a crucial part in the lives of their bosses. PAs help to organize their bosses’ daily routine, so directors don’t have to worry about such details as the times of meetings, airplane tickets or e-mail messages.

The structure of any company is very much like a human body where all the organs, from a PA to the CEO, perform important functions and if one organ stops functioning well the work of the others becomes disorganised.
