Home Assignments/Independent Study

For Thursday, August 16

  • Diary: describe your activities and meetings today (Wednesday, August 15) – what you did in the morning, afternoon and evening and whom you talked to during the day. Type your diary’s first day on a separate sheet of paper and bring to class. Please type your name, ID and the date of the diary.

  • Listening task: listen to the story of John Henry (Listening materials, our L:drive folder) as many times as you want and then write the main idea of the story and if you liked or disliked the story and why. This writing task should be typed, printed and submitted in class.

  • Bring your copy of The Scarlet Letter for the in-class reading. New students should take a copy of the book from their classmates and make copies for themselves during the break.

  • Print and read the course syllabus, prepare questions about the course goals, outcomes, assignments, grading and policies.

For Friday, August 17:

  • Bring your copy of The Scarlet Letter for the in-class reading. New students should take a copy of the book from their classmates and make copies for themselves during the break. Read Chapter 1.

  • Print and read the course syllabus, prepare questions about the course goals, outcomes, assignments, grading and policies.

  • Listen to The Gift of Magi (our L:drive folder), write a brief description of the story, who the main characters are and what the main idea of the story is. Type, print and bring this writing task to class. Please type your name, ID and the date of the assignment.

Copy out and learn by heart:

5 Adjectives;

5 Verbs;

5 Nouns;

Submit a list of the words

  • Describe your day today (what you did, who you met, what you talked about with these people, what you learned from them, etc). Type your diary’s first day on a separate sheet of paper and bring to class. Please type your name, ID and the date of the diary*.

* Diaries for August 15-16 (approximately 150 words per each).

For Monday, August 20:

  • Bring one object that you like a lot for a game!)))

  • Listening task: listen to the story of John Henry (Listening materials, our L:drive folder) as many times as you want and then write who John Henry was and why he became a hero, what the main idea of the story is and if you liked or disliked the story and why. This writing task should be typed, printed and submitted in class. In addition, type the words and phrases that were new to you, find their transcriptions and translations in the dictionary.

  • Read Chapters 2 and 3 of The Scarlet Letter, bring the book to class. On a separate sheet of paper write what new things you have learned about the main characters and why Hester does not tell people the name of her child. Also, on this paper write down the sentences with the new words, their transcriptions and translations.

  • Find some information about O. Wilde (Internet) and read Chapters 1 and 2 of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Write the answers to these questions:

- Why did O.Wilde write such a beginning of the story?

- What does Dorian Gray look like?

- Why doesn’t Basil want to show the portrait in an art gallery?

- Why doesn’t Basil want Lord Henry Wotton to meet Dorian?

In case you want to quote some information from the book, please use the quotation marks (“…”).

  • Diary writing: describe your weekend (what you did, who you met, what you talked about with these people, what you learned from them, etc). Type the diary on a separate sheet of paper and bring to class. Please type your name, ID and the date/s of the diary*.

For Tuesday, August 21:

  • Bring one object that you like a lot for a game!)))

  • Read Chapters 4 and 5 of The Scarlet Letter, bring the book to class. Answer the questions:

Who is speaking or thinking?

a. “I want her to be free, as free as a bird in the sky”

b. “This letter teaches me important lessons every day”

c. “Her mother is not teaching her the right things”

d. “My mother found me in some wild flowers outside the prison door”

e. “The mother has to show her child the way to Heaven”

Write down new words, their transcriptions and translations.

  • Listen to the dictations (Tracks 15 – Homes, and 34 - Actors) available on L-drive; put down what you hear.

  • Diaries should be written and presented on a daily basis with no reminders. Check the instructions given above.

For Wednesday, August 22:

  • Diary: describe one particular event that happened to you on Tuesday. Please explain why it happened (what other events caused it), what exactly happened (in detail) and what are the consequences of this event for you (and other people if they were also involved).

  • Read Ch. 6 and 7 of The Scarlet Letter, write 3 questions of fact, 3 questions of preference and 3 questions of judgement based on the content of Ch. 1-7, please write your own answers to the questions. Type, print and bring the assignment to the first class. You will ask and answer these questions in class. Bring the book to class as well 

  • Read the syllabus again, underline and translate new words (in the syllabus, not in your notebook), make/write any questions about the content and tasks of the course to ask them in class. Bring the syllabus to the first class.

  • Listen to the three dictations in the Listening Materials folder, write them down word-for-word and then tell us (Ainur and me) what new words/phrases you have learned, what words’ pronunciation you have reviewed; write if these dictations are useful for you, for developing your English listening and speaking skills as well as increasing your vocabulary (yes, no, somewhat, other responses and why).

For Thursday, August 23:

  • Read Chapters 3 and 4 of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Write the answers to the following questions:

  1. How does Dorian feel when he first looks at the portrait?

  2. Dorian remembers what Harry said in the garden. How does Dorian feel about the portrait now?

  3. Dorian makes a wish. What does he wish?

  4. Basil says, “You have made me hate my best painting”

    1. What does Basil decide to do?

    2. What does Dorian do?

  1. Harry sees Dorian many times in the next few weeks. What does Harry do and why?

  2. Dorian tells Harry that he has fallen in love. Who has Dorian fallen in love with?

  3. What do Harry and Dorian arrange to do the next night?

  4. Harry gets a telegram. What does the telegram tell him?

Make a list of new words and expressions; at least 14-15 per a chapter.

For Friday, August 24:

  • Prepare for a vocabulary quiz: review new words and expressions from Ch. 1-7 in The Scarlet Letter, a handout called Describing people’s appearance, The Gift of the Magi and John Henry (audio stories; listen to these stories again to review the words). You will be asked to identify the words and expressions and create your own sentences with them. The purpose of this quiz is to review and practice using new vocabulary. You will be assessed on how well you can recognize/identify new words and use them in sentences. Please make sure that you know the pronunciation of the words because I will be dictating some of them. You are responsible for the oral recognition of the words.

  • Collect all your papers checked by me in one file and submit it in class. Please make changes in your assignments based on my comments and questions. Please change/add proper headings and titles to all your written tasks (see Headings in your papers NEW). In addition, create sentences with all new words that you typed in your tasks (together with their transcriptions and translations).

  • Bring your 9 questions with the answers on The Scarlet Letter to class. Read Ch. 8-10 of the book. Yeah!!! We will know what will happen to Hester and Pearl at the end of the story!

  • In your Diary please describe one particular event that happened to you on Thursday (think about and write its causes, process and consequences).
