Intensive Reading: finish reading Ch. 5 of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

1. Who says these sentences and why are they important in the story?

“This little shoe is the only thing that the gypsies left me.”

“All that I ever loved!”

2. Write your own 3 questions of preference (for example, “Who is your favorite character?” and 3 questions of judgement (for example, “What the strong and weak features of Quasimodo’s character?”) based on the entire story. Bring the printed home task to the first class!

2. No Diary, but Paragraph Writing: Describe one or two unusual things that happened to you in the past. Tell me what happened, when, where, how, who was involved, why and how it affected your life. The first and the last sentences should contain the main idea of your paragraph, in other words, you need to introduce this unusual thing. If you don’t remember any unusual situations, you should create one!) Your paragraph should have minimum 10 lines of text. Please use Times New Roman, size 12 and double space.

Bring the printed paragraph to the first class!

You can start writing your story by using these expressions (or create your own):

“Once when I was 9, ……………………(introduce your unusual thing - the main idea of your paragraph) happened to me.”

“In 2003, when I was in a children’s summer camp, ……………………(introduce your unusual thing - the main idea of your paragraph) happened to me.”

For Friday, September 7:

        1. Review your descriptive paragraph about your own special treasure: make changes based on my comments (change grammar, vocabulary, add more sentences), print a revised copy and submit both paragraphs to me (the original and revised).

        1. Extensive reading: read Ch. 10-11 of The Picture of Dorian Gray and respond to the following questions:

  • Seventeen years have passed. What does Dorian look like now? What does the picture look like?

  • Why isn’t Dorian happy?

  • Why does Dorian take Basil upstairs to the room in the attic?

  • Why did Dorian kill Basil?
