Exercise 1. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct form: Present or Past Continuous Passive.

Exercise 2. A visitor is being shown around the factory by Mr Jones, the manager. Complete his sentences. Use the passive (present

simple or continuous).

The machines (switch on) at 7.30 a.m. every day and (turn off) at 5.30 p.m. The factory (lock) at 6.30 p.m. by our security guards and all the staff (check) before they go home. We don’t want our jam to disappear! Now as you can see, strawberry jam (make) here today. And over there the jars (put) into boxes by our team. Exercise 1. Read the following sentences. Note the use of the Present Perfect Passive. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. Rugby has always been played with an oval ball. 2. Has the problem been discussed yet? 3. Jane hasn’t been told about it. 4. The house looks quite new. It has been painted. 5. Exercise 7. Read the following text and translate it into Russian. Put questions to the sentences in the passive voice. Retell the text.

Heavy snow has fallen in the North of England. Many roads have been blocked and traffic has been brought to a standstill. One town, Castlepool in Yorkshire, has been completely cut off. Supplies will be dropped into the town by air this afternoon.

Exercise 10. Put the verbs in brackets into the Present Perfect: active or passive.

John: Are things in the company different now?

Sara: Yes. What has happened is that the Sales and Marketing Department (turn) into three separate divisions - there is now an International Division, a UK Division, and there’s a new office that (set up) in the US.

John: Is Peter still in charge?

Sara: No, they (make) him a Senior Director, so he doesn’t have much to do with the department now. Laura (promote) to Sales Director, so they all report directly to her. Benedict Warner and Kate Lang (put) in charge of the International Division and the UK Division.

John: They (send) Ken to the US?

Sara: No, not at all. He didn’t get on with Laura, basically, so he (demote) to UK Sales Assistant, and he works for Kate. Obviously he’s not very happy about it and he doesn’t think the company (treat) him fairly. I don’t expect he’ll stay long.

Exercise 11. Translate into English using the Present Perfect Passive.

We knew he had been seen there. 7. The plant had been run by the head engineer for a fortnight before a new director was appointed. 8. She saw at once that nothing had been touched in her room. 9. The vegetables didn’t taste very good. They had been cooked for too long. 10. The car was three years old but hadn’t been used very much. 11. Exercise 4. Turn from active into passive.

1. They had cancelled the 9.15 train, so I took a later train. 2. By that time everybody had forgotten that story. 3. I thought they had already sent the letter. 4. Evidently somebody had informed him of the news before they announced it. 5. Nobody had warmed me of the danger before the accident happened. 6. The girl was angry as her mother hadn’t allowed her to go to the cinema. 7. They informed me that they had seen you in Oxford Street. 8. We have put out the fire before the fire brigade arrived. 9. I found out that my friend had sent the parcel to the wrong address. 10. When he looked at the stamps, he found they had sold him the wrong ones. 11. I was surprised to hear that they had given him the first prize. 12. We didn’t know that he had lost all the photos. 13. We couldn’t enter the house as she had locked it. 14. He couldn’t drink any milk as his sister hadn’t bought it. 15. I was shocked to hear that somebody had broken into your house. 16. She couldn’t give you the money as she had spent it.

Exercise 5. Read the following text and translate it into Russian. Put questions to the sentences in the passive. Retell the text.

The whole village soon learnt that a large sum of money had been lost. Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savings to the post-office. Sam was sure that the wallet had been found by one of the villagers, but it was not returned to him. Three months passed, and then one morning, Sam found his wallet outside his front door. It had been wrapped up in a newspaper and it contained half the money he had lost, together with a note which said:”A thief, but only 50 per cent a thief!” Two months later, some money was sent to Sam with another note:”Only 25 per cent a thief now!” In time, all Sam’s money was paid back in this way. The last note said:”I am 100 per cent honest now!”

Exercise 8. Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Perfect: active or passive.

Samantha Phillips said yesterday that she was ‘delighted’ with the decision of an Industrial Tribunal after she (award) 18,000 pounds for unfair dismissal. Miss Phillips, a 28 year old City worker, told the court that she (sack) because she (reject) the sexual advances of her boss. Her former employer said that Miss Phillips (dismiss) because she (not/do) her job properly. The judge agreed that Miss Phillips (make) some ‘foolish’ business decisions, but said that Miss Phillips (not/treat) fairly by the company.

Exercise 9. Translate into English using the Past Perfect Passive.
