Exercise 4. Rewrite the following passages in the Passive.

  1. Some people saw a UFO in the sky above London last night. They reported it to the police. The army sent a helicopter to look at it more closely. The UFO shot the helicopter down and killed both men in it. People have given photographs of the UFO to the police. Experts are looking at them now.

II. Someone broke into a local jewellery shop yesterday. The owner had just locked up the shop when a robber with a gun threatened him. The robber told him to unlock the shop and give him all the diamonds in the safe. Then the robber tied him up. The police have organised a search for the robber. They hope they will find him in a few days. Doctors are treating the owner of the shop for shock.

III. My uncle painted a picture. Someone has offered him a lot of money for it. He will deliver the painting tomorrow. When they give him the money he will tell them the truth. He painted it one night while he was sleep walking!

IV. Our school is organising a concert. The teachers will choose the best project about the environment. The students must include pictures and drawings in their projects. The students will also have to do all the writings themselves. The school will give the winner a set of encyclopaedias.

Exercise 10. Complete the paragraph. Use a passive verb in the correct tense.

A. Barford Hall

The building at the top of the High Street is Barford Hall. It (build) in 1827 and today it (regard) as the finest Georgean building in the country. A number of changes (make) since it (build), but the front of the building (not to change). Today the Hall (own) by Bardale Council, and for the last ten years it (use) as a home for Barford Arts Centre. At the moment a small art gallery (build) behind the Hall.

Exercise 12. Complete the paragraph using the correct form of the passive voice.

Exercise 13. Complete the paragraph using the correct form of the passive voice.

I’m glad you’ve come to visit our college. I hope that many of you will enrol next year. First, let’s visit some of out classrooms. In this room, students (teach) French. Here at Greenville College, we believe that all students should (teach) to speak a foreign language.

The students in the next room are studying history. History classes are usually very lively, but today the students (give) an examination.

This room is a science classroom. You can stay for a while and listen. I’m sure many interesting ideas (discuss) right now. In a little while we’re going to see the cafeteria where all the school food (prepare). We believe that young people should (feed) good nutritious food. That’s why we’ve planted the vegetable garden you see next to the cafeteria. The vegetable that our students are eating today (grow) in our garden.

Exercise 14. Rewrite the text without the words underlined. Use the passive voice, and make any other necessary changes.

Begin: It is not really known...

Nobody really knows how people invented the game of basketball. People say that some ancient Greek vases show the game and people playing it. People generally think, however, that the game began in the United States quite recently.

Somebody thought of the game in a YMCA club. Nobody can prove this of course, so perhaps it did begin earlier. Wherever people first played the game, basketball is now very popular, and many thousand of people play it, as people can play it outdoors and indoors. Personally, I wish nobody had ever invented it, because people keep me awake when a big game is on TV. The noise is terrible.

Exercise 15. Below is a short article about computers. Put the verbs in brackets into the passive voice. Choose the correct tense, or use the modal verb if one is given.

Computers then and now

The world’s first electronic computer (build) at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946, although computer-like machines (build) in the 19th century. Computers (sell) commercially for the first time in the 1950s, and a lot of progress (make) since then. Computers are now much smaller and more powerful, and they (can/buy) much more cheaper.

Computers (use) in many fields - in business, science, medicine and education, for example. They (can/use) to forecast the weather or to control robots which make cars. The computer’s memory is the place

where information (keep) and calculations (do).

A computer cannot think for itself - it (must/tell) exactly what to do. A lot of difficult calculations (can/do) very quickly on a computer.

And computers don’t make mistakes. Stories (hear) sometimes about computers paying people too much money or sending them bills for things they didn’t buy. These mistakes (make) by the programmers - the people who give the computer its instructions. Some years ago, a computer-controlled rocket belonging to the USA went out of control and (have to/destroy). The accident (cause) by a small mistake in one line of the programme. This mistake cost the USA $18 million.

Criminals have found out the ‘computer crimes’ are often a lot easier than robbing banks. Hundreds of millions of dollars (steal) from American businesses every year by people changing the information in computers.

Large numbers of home computers (sell) recently, especially in the USA and Britain. People know more about computers than they used to, and computers are playing a bigger part in our lives. Progress (make) all the time. Many people believe we can look forward to the day when even our household jobs like cleaning (do) by computer-controlled robots.

Exercise 16. Read the following texts and translate them into Russian. Put questions to the sentences in the passive voice. Retell the texts.

Text 1

We have an old musical instrument. It is called a clavichord. It was made in Germany in 1681. Our clavichord is kept in the living-room. It has belonged to our family for a long time.` The instrument was bought by my grandmother many years ago. Recently it was damaged by a visitor. She tried to play jazz on it! She struck the keys too hard and two of the strings were broken. My father was shocked. Now we are not allowed to touch it. It is being repaired by a friend of my father’s.

Text 2

Ted Robinson has been worried all the week. Last Tuesday he received a letter from the local police. In the letter he was asked to call at the station. Ted wondered why he was wanted by the police, but he went to the station yesterday and now he is not worried any more. At the station he was told by a smiling policeman that his bicycle had been found. Five years ago, the policeman told him, the bicycle was picked up in a small village four hundred miles away. It is now being sent to his home by train. Ted was most surprised when he heard the news. He was amused too, because he never expected the bicycle to be found. It was stolen twenty years ago when Ted was a boy of fifteen!

Text 3

An old man had many sons who were always quarrelling. One day the sons were called before their father. A bundle of sticks was given to them and they were ordered to break it. Each of the sons tried with all his strength but the bundle could not be broken. At last it was untied by the old man and each son was given one stick. Of course, the sticks were broken easily. ‘My sons’, said the old man, ‘if you are together, live in friendship and help each other, you can always be strong and needn’t be afraid of enemies’.

Text 4

The King and the Stars

This happened many years ago, when people believed that their fate could be foretold by the stars. There lived a king who had a daughter. One day his daughter fell ill. An astrologer was sent for. He was ordered to come to the palace to foretell the king’s daughter’s fate. The astrologer looked at the stars through the telescope and said:’Your Majesty, I have just been told by the stars that your daughter will soon be cured by the doctor.’

But some time later the king’s daughter died. The king said to his servants:’The astrologer must be punished.’

When the astrologer was brought to the palace the king asked him:’Now, what are you told by the stars about your fate?’ The astrologer was clever enough to answer:’Your Majesty, I’ve just been told that I shall be killed two days before your death.’

Exercise 17. Choose the correct answer.

The National Security Bank in downtown San Antonio (robbed/was robbed) last night. A safe (blew open/was blown open) and around $ 800,000 (stole/was stolen). Exercise 18. Put the verbs in brackets in the correct tense, and decide if it is active or passive.
