Dialog 2
Al the Dentist’s
When we have toothache (when a tooth hurts us), we go the dentist’s. The dentist examines our teeth and performs a treatment. We often can hear he says: «That tooth has a cavity and I must stop it (or I must put in a filling)». If the tooth is too bad, the dentist extracts it.
Receptionist: Dr. Green’s office. May I help you?
Patient: My name is Black. I’ve got a dental appointment at 3 o’clock
today. But I would like to put off my appointment to see the
dentist earlier, somewhere in the morning. Would you mind
arranging it?
Receptionist: Just a minute. I’ll see the list of appointments. (After
some minutes) Yes, you can come at 9a.m. to see Dr. Green.
Patient: Thank you very much.
Receptionist: Not at all.
(In the Dr. Green’s office)
Patient: Doctor, I have a very bad toothache?
Dentist: Sit down in the chair here. Thus, open your mouth, please.
(He examines his visitor’s teeth) Which tooth is it that hurts
you (pains you)?
Patient: It’s a big tooth at the back on the left. Ugh! That hurts very
badly.
Dentist: Yes, that tooth has a big cavity, but I think I can stop it for
you.
Why didn’t you come earlier?
Patient: Well, you know, it is not quite a pleasure to go to the
dentist’s.
And every time I decided to come, it got better.
Dentist: I’ll put a filling in this one, but there is another tooth hear it
which is too bad to be filled. I suppose, I’ll have to extract
it. But don’t be afraid, it will not hurt you. I shall give you
an injection before I extract it.
Next day our patient could answer the somebody’s question with confident: “My tooth doesn’t pain me now”.
